May 2015
Older Americans Month 2015: ‘Get into the Act’ Older adults are a vital part of our society. Since 1963, communities across the country have shown their gratitude by celebrating Older Americans Month each May. The theme of this year’s celebration is “Get into the Act,” to focus on how older adults are taking charge of their health, getting engaged in their communities, and making a positive impact in the lives of others. By promoting and engaging in activity, wellness, and inclusivity, more Americans than ever before can “Get into the Act.” While Presbyterian Manors of MidAmerica campuses provides quality senior services guided by Christian values to older adults year-round, Older Americans Month offers an opportunity to emphasize how older adults can access the home- and community-based services they need to live independently in their communities. It is also an occasion to highlight how older adults are engaging with and making a difference in those communities. Throughout the month,Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor will be conducting activities designed to highlight the contributions of seniors to the greater community.
Protecting seniors from scams
Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor hosts free program Older adults are often the targets of scams to steal their hard-earned savings. More than $2 billion is stolen from seniors every year. Hear how financial fraud is directed at the elderly and learn how to prevent it at “Protect Yourself Against Scams,” a free presentation at Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor May 15. Denise Groene, state director for the Better Business Bureau, will go over several scams and give suggestions on how to guard against them. She also will review why seniors are more at risk and how to report a scam. “Protect Yourself Against Scams” will begin at 1:30 p.m. May 15 in the chapel at Arkansas Presbyterian Manor, 1711 N. Fourth. It is part of Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor’s Just Ask series, a free, ongoing lifelong learning program featuring information from local, regional and national experts on topics of interest to older adults and their families. Devotional: Motherhood
By Wayne Rector, Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor resident
As I contemplated the subject, I was reminded of the cardinal redbird hen, which built her nest this spring in the rose bush next to our kitchen window, and the lesson she gave us in dedicated devotion to her work. Guided by her God-given instincts, she worked tirelessly
Wayne Rector and long, expending enormous amounts of energy making
countless trips into the rose bush with nesting materials in her beak. Then came the long hours of sitting to incubate the eggs. Later I watched as she sat on her carefully constructed nest, shielding her newly hatched chicks from the cold. And now the procession of trips to the nest with food for the little ones. Motherhood, that unique and sublime calling designed and ordained by God, is evident in all God’s creatures. The perpetuity of life in all creation depends on it. Bringing an infant into being, then nurturing and lovingly caring for it. Then molding and shaping its life toward a purposeful existence. All this is done with the instinct which God has instilled deep down in the innermost reaches of a mother’s heart. God gave us mothers, and it is very appropriate that we acknowledge and respectfully honor them.

Donna Thompson’s “Route 66” took the blue ribbon in the quilting competition. Prizes were given in eight categories at the annual exhibit, held in March. For the competition, works must have been completed in the past five years. “We are honored to exhibit artwork by seniors,” said Tara Clawson, marketing director. “Art is Ageless is unique in featuring only the works of artists age 65 and older. Started in 1980, Art is Ageless is an extension of Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America’s wellness programs, which focus on mental, physical, social and spiritual health. Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America’s Art is Ageless program encourages Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor residents and other area seniors to express their creativity through its annual competition, as well as art classes, musical and dramatic events, educational opportunities and current events discussions throughout the year.
Tulips help grow Good Samaritan Program Colorful paper tulips – each representing a gift to the Good Samaritan Program for Benevolent Care – are adding to the spring decorations at PMMA’s senior living communities. Prior donors received a mailing in April, inviting a gift in honor or tribute to a special woman in their lives. A paper tulip was included. The tulip may be returned with the gift to the PMMA campus of the donor’s choice. Tulips will be displayed through May. The Good Samaritan Program assists PMMA residents who have run out of funds through no fault of their own. To make a gift and hang a tulip, contact your local PMMA campus.
