Mother’s Day 1996 By Wayne Rector, Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor resident

Who can measure a mother’s love? Only God our creator, I suppose, for he has instilled this special gift in the mother of all His creation. A recent news item told of a mother cat which had rescued her five kittens from a burning building. Endowed with an undying mother’s Wayne Rector love, she braved the smoke and flames to carry her babies out one by one; setting them down outside and racing back in to get another one. When the last one was out she began to move them across the street for greater safety, whereupon firemen at the scene helped her move them. By then her eyes were blistered shut so she touched each one with her nose to make sure they were safe. At last report the “family” was doing well and the kittens were in great demand for adoption. Mothers are like that. The love and devotion of a mother is God’s gift to mankind. A mother’s love depends not on whether her children do good or not. Her heart may be gladdened or saddened by what they do, but her love will never fail. Out father, we think you so much for our mothers; for the unique love you have installed in their hearts. Bless them today and always we pray. In Jesus name, amen.

Neva’s fitness tips Neva Bahruth doesn’t mince words about fitness. It’s a priority in her life, and she thinks it should be one in yours, too. The first thing older adults should do? “They’ve got to get out of that recliner. They have to,” Neva said. Neva moved from her farm to Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor in 2002, and she started attending the aerobics class almost right away. The small but dedicated group met three times a week.

quit, Neva didn’t let the class quit, too. She took over and continued teaching exercise classes off and on for another eight years. Today she still walks regularly and remains committed as ever to her physical fitness.

“What I liked was the routine,” she said. “At a certain time every day, I was devoted to what I was doing.”

To hear Neva tell it, there’s no good alternative to staying in shape. All the years she lived and worked on the farm, side by side with her husband, physical activity was just a way of life. It balanced out the hours she spent sitting at work, in the communications office for the railroad.

more sedentary, that’s when exercise must become intentional. We asked Neva for her advice to older adults about getting and staying active. 1. Make a plan. Exercise should be an appointment you make with yourself, and don’t break, Neva said. “You have to make yourself a little plan,” for fitness, Neva continues. “Go do it first thing in the day. By that time you’ve already got yourself keyed up and going, and that’s important.” 2. Don’t wait any longer. Neva said people have told her time and again that they’re “not ready” to start exercising. To that, she says, there will never be a better time than now. “You want to enjoy what time you’ve got left and be in fairly decent shape.” 3. Focus on the long term. Neva said the best benefit anyone can gain from even a little exercise is a better quality of life. She pays attention to small steps because they do add up. “I want, every day, to feel like I’m making progress.” May is the month we celebrate both Older Americans Month and National Senior Health and Fitness Day (May 25). What a perfect time to find a workout that works for you! Check the calendar for activities at Presbyterian Manor that are a good fit for your fitness goals. Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor
