Clay Center Presbyterian Manor announces Art is Ageless® winners

Clay Center Presbyterian Manor recently hosted a reception for the winning artists in the annual Art is Ageless® juried competition.

“We are honored to exhibit artwork by seniors,” said Kristen Pedigo, activity director. “Art is Ageless is unique in featuring only the works of artists age 65 and older. Our artists prove that art, in any form, is an ageless ambition.”

Presbyterian Manor of Mid-America system to celebrate 70 years On April 19, Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America (PMMA) will celebrate its 70th anniversary. Our first very first community opened in Newton, Kansas, on April 19, 1949, nearly two years after ninetyyear-old Alice Kalb of El Dorado, Kansas, asked the United Presbyterian Synod if it would consider opening a home for the aged. A small exploratory committee looked at the idea and determined it had merit.

Instead, based on the separate suggestions of two women—Mrs. Mary Page of Topeka and Grace Derby of Manhattan, it was named Newton Presbyterian Manor. Grace later lived at Presbyterian Manor in Newton until her death in 1966.

Alice’s dream has turned into a network of 17 senior living communities across Kansas and Missouri with more than 2,400 residents, and the mission of the organization remains true to its core: to provide quality senior services guided by Christian values. PMMA has plans to extend its mission into Colorado with the proposed development of Aberdeen Ridge in Colorado Springs.

Frances learned to quilt from her mother 40 years ago. She creates all of her pieces by machine. Frances created Total Eclipse in 2018 and used the paper piecing technique. This technique is a slow process, but the result is very precise points and design. Frances is 77 years old and lives in Clay Center.

Arlene picked up leaves from the Utility Park walking trail. She drew “Leaves of Utility Park” by Arlene Habluetzel placed first in amateur painting and was named the Judges’ Choice.

1st – “Red Bird” by Marjorie Grator. Marjorie created this work in 2019 with colored pencils. She enjoys sewing and crocheting as well as other artwork. Marjorie is 96 years old and lives in Leonardville, Kan.

2nd – “Flowers and Fairies” by Lorraine Oman. Lorraine created this work in 2019 with colored pencils. She likes to draw, sew, cook, and bake. Lorraine is 87 years old and lives in Leonardville.

3rd – “Childhood Home” by Marjorie Nutsch. Marjorie drew her childhood home with pencil in 2019. She grew up in this home just north of Morrowville, Kan. She has many

Quilting, Amateur:

1st – “Bargello Study” by Frances Benson. Frances created this quilt in 2018. She continually likes to try new patterns and techniques. This quilt is a Bargello style quilt where strips of fabric are sewn together to form a tube. The tube is cut into various widths and sewn to make stair-step patterns.

2nd – “T-Shirt Quilt” by Verna Lee Musselman. Verna Lee created this quilt in 2018 and 2019. Her granddaughter gave Verna her t-shirts LIKE US ON FACEBOOK

Local competition winners will join winners from 16 other Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America communities to be judged at the masterpiece level. Winning entries at the masterpiece level are selected for publication in PMMA’s annual Art is Ageless calendar and note cards.

Art is Ageless is a copyrighted program of Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America. For the competition, works must have been completed in the past five years. Started in 1980, Art is Ageless is an extension of Presbyterian Manors of MidAmerica’s wellness programs, which focus on mental, physical, social and spiritual health. Presbyterian Manors of MidAmerica’s Art is Ageless program encourages Clay Center Presbyterian Manor residents and other area seniors to express their creativity through its annual competition, as well as art classes, musical and dramatic events, educational opportunities and current events discussions throughout the year.
