Local artist among Art is Ageless® masterpiece level winners

Local winning artist in the Clay Center Presbyterian Manor annual Art is Ageless® juried competition will be featured in the 2024 Art is Ageless calendar produced by PMMA (Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America®).

“Country Church,” a Painting entry by Douglas Fowles, will appear in the calendar when it is released this fall.

Works by local winners are automatically entered into a masterpiece level competition with winning art from 14 other PMMA® communities. More than 190 entries were received for this year’s masterpiece competition. The winners are featured in the Art is Ageless calendar with pull-out postcards and greeting cards.

“Blue Birds of Happiness in Canopy,” a Quilting entry by Vevia Beaulieu, and “Crocheted Hats and Shawl,” a Fiber Arts entry by Retha Hornbostel, will be included in the calendar’s honorable mention gallery.

“Enduring Appeal,” a Quilting entry by Jane Crawshaw, will be featured on Art is Ageless greeting cards.

“We are honored to exhibit artwork by seniors,” said Amy Hoch Altwegg, executive director. “Art is Ageless is unique in featuring only the works of senior artists. Our artists prove that art, in any form, is an ageless ambition.”

A copyrighted program of PMMA, Art is Ageless is open exclusively to people aged 65 and older. For the competition, works must have been completed in the past five years.

Personal Kansas book builds relationships, connections

For former New Yorker-turnedKansan Deb Woods, the Sunflower state might not have felt quite like home right away. But former teacher Mary Mayer turned the page on that with a homemade scrapbook with detailed information about Kansas facts and history.

“I began working for Presbyterian Manor in March of this year,” said Deb. “I have met amazing residents and staff. Around June, I was gifted an amazing book all about Kansas and its wonderful history from one of our cottage residents, Mary.”

The book is filled with the rich and interesting history of Kansas, complete with pictures of iconic Kansas images - such as President Dwight Eisenhower, the University of Kansas Jayhawk, the state reptile - the Ornate Box Turtle, and the state capitol building in Topeka.

New event carries familiar mission

Many residents of Clay Center Presbyterian Manor have encountered difficult and new challenges during the past several years, and their need for help from our community has grown.

Traditionally, the annual “Pasta with a Purpose” event has served as a unique event for friends and family to contribute to the Good Samaritan program, which raises funds to help close the financial gap for those in need. After much consideration and discussion with our mission committee, we’ve decided that it’s time to start a new tradition – one with the same core

mission to help our neighbors.

Baubles & Barrels will be held from 611 p.m. on November 10 at the Vintage Gardens Downtown. It will be a night to remember with jewels and a selection of wine, bourbon, and local beer all paired with a plated dinner. There will even be a chance to win a diamond necklace valued at $500.

Your sponsorship and support of the Baubles & Barrels event will get us closer to our $10,000 fundraising goal and help us close the gap on roughly $125,000 of needed care and service. Last year 14 residents were served by

the Good Samaritan Program at Clay Center. The sooner you declare your sponsorship, the more information we can include about your organization in the event’s promotional materials. For more information contact Amy Hoch Altwegg at ahochaltwegg@pmma.org u

Personal Kansas –

continued from page 1

Before moving to Clay Center Presbyterian Manor, Mary lived in Independence, Kansas, and visited all the state capitols and all 105 Kansas County Courthouses. Before her retirement in 1993, Mary was a special education teacher in Hutchinson.

“My mom, husband, and I have been planning to visit some places in the scrapbook,” Deb said. “We have already visited Wamego, and Kansas City. I am truly excited to visit Mary’s hometown of Independence.”

The scrapbook was a thoughtful present, Deb said, and has made her feel welcome in Kansas, and at Clay Center Presbyterian Manor.

“I am beyond thankful for this gift,” she said. “The thought, time, and absolute details she included is priceless to me. The fact that at one time she did this scrapbooking for a

student to have the history of Kansas, and then thought of me and put her words and pictures down for me to see is a true testament to the amazing person she is.” u

Clay Center Presbyterian Manor shares customer service survey responses

Clay Center Presbyterian Manor continues to seek customer feedback through monthly telephone surveys. Each month, residents and their representatives are randomly selected to participate in telephone satisfaction surveys conducted by Pinnacle Quality Insight. The graphic highlights recent survey results. All scores are given on a 5-point scale, with 5 being the highest score and 1 the lowest score. Between July 2022 and June 2023, Clay Center Presbyterian Manor residents and their families gave the community high scores for communication, safety and security, and the move-in process.

“They have always been caring, helpful, and provided good care for her over the years,” said one resident’s family member.

We greatly value the opinions of our residents and their representatives

about the care and services we provide, and we encourage them to participate honestly when contacted by Pinnacle Quality Insight. All state and federal confidentiality laws are met in Pinnacle’s service. u
