Food drive and pantry
Aberdeen Village residents are no strangers to giving. Many of our residents have been lifelong givers, with most of them volunteering in some capacity throughout their lives. For the second year in a row, the residents of Aberdeen Village headed up a food drive for one of our local churches, Covenant Presbyterian. While this church congregation is small in number, it is mighty in its own philanthropic endeavors. Covenant Presbyterian Church has 80 members, but they still manage to serve lunch every weekday and offer a food pantry. Aberdeen Village had such great success last year with the drive, our residents wanted to help again. With the assistance of our chaplain and some very generous residents, we held a food drive. Together, we collected 307 pounds of food and $555 for the Covenant Presbyterian Church food pantry. Our residents prove every day that philanthropy is something that sticks with you. Not only does it make you feel good, it does good!

My favorite hobby
The joys of penning a letter to friends When Carolyn McCaul was growing up with four older sisters, their father suggested each of his girls collect an item as a hobby. Would you believe Carolyn chose ash trays? They were quite a popular item back in the 1930s, but that hobby didn’t last forever for Carolyn. It wasn’t until 1947, when Carolyn’s company transferred her from California to Kansas City, that she realized how much she enjoyed writing letters to the family and friends she had left behind.Years later, when her children went to colleges in Dallas, Tulsa and Kansas, she always wrote to them and was rewarded with replies. “I still very much enjoy communicating with my friends and family that are now in Fargo, Chicago and Lawrence, but rather than using my computer, I pull out the trusty old pen and paper and get to writing,” Carolyn said. “I think it gives me more pleasure to put the pen to paper to express my feelings of love and happiness, and I know my friends and family enjoy receiving handwritten letters and cards from me.”

We will feature women’s history in an upcoming issue of Community Matters. We want to know about the achievements of the women who live on our campuses. If you were among the first women in the workforce or elected office, or if you just want to tell the world what you love about your senior living community, we want to share the story.
Our mission: We provide quality senior services guided by Christian values.
Contact Chrissie Ammann, director of sales and marketing, and your story could be featured in an upcoming edition of Community Matters.
