Unsung hero: Jill McGrath Exhibit and reception features senior artists Since the beginning of time, creative expression has brought joy to both its creators and those who experience their art. The Art is Ageless® program offers senior artists the opportunity to share and display their artwork, and reaffirms the agelessness of human creativity. This month, their works are on display at Emporia Presbyterian Manor. “It’s inspiring to see the beautiful pieces these seniors have created,” said Crystal Stock, marketing director for Emporia Presbyterian Manor. “The joy it brings to them and others is wonderful, and that’s something we want to celebrate and share with the entire Emporia community.” The Art is Ageless exhibit will feature works from local artists who are 65 and older, including a few Emporia Presbyterian Manor residents. The public is welcome to visit the community to view the exhibit of acrylics, ART, continued on page 3

Truth be told, Jill McGrath probably isn’t going to like this story. Never one to seek out the limelight, Jill is content to stay behind the scenes and quietly do the little things that help Emporia Presbyterian Manor fulfill its mission. This is exactly what makes her an unsung hero. A team member for 18 years, Jill is Presbyterian Manor’s one-person medical records department. From ensuring that each person’s medications are accurately entered into the computer system, to working with insurance companies and government agencies to meet ever-changing guidelines, she plays a critical role in Presbyterian Manor’s ability to provide exceptional care. “Jill deserves to be recognized as an ‘unsung hero’ because of her efforts Jill McGrath to ensure our documentation is a direct reflection of the type of quality services we provide to our residents,” said Leigh Ayers, health services director. Known for her dedication, expertise and attention to detail, Jill is the type of team member others have learned to both respect and rely on. “She always goes that extra mile to be sure that her job is completed and that she lives up to her Christian values when dealing with staff and residents,” said Maria Lane, director of social services. It is that commitment to her Christian values that many believe makes Jill a perfect fit for Emporia Presbyterian Manor. HERO, continued on page 2

Founder’s Day celebrates 69 years of service to seniors Employees of Emporia Presbyterian Manor will observe the founding of Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America this month as the company celebrates 69 years of providing quality senior services guided by Christian values in Kansas and Missouri. Each Presbyterian Manors of MidAmerica campus will have its own celebration with residents and employees during April, acknowledging the importance each plays in making life at Emporia Presbyterian Manor “the way you want to live.” “Many of our employees view what they do as a calling, not just a job,” said Bruce Shogren, president and CEO. “Our dedicated employees

Presbyterian Manors of MidAmerica’s roots go back to 1947. Alice Kalb, a widow from central Kansas, appealed to a Presbyterian Church organization to establish a home for seniors. Her vision became the first Presbyterian Manor

community in Newton, Kan., in 1949, and inspired others to do even more. Today, PMMA remains true to the spirit of Alice’s vision, providing quality senior services guided by Christian values. For more information about Emporia Presbyterian Manor’s celebration, contact Crystal Stock, marketing director, at 620-343-2613 or cstock@pmma.org.

“The reason behind what she does is a true belief in the PMMA mission of providing quality senior services guided by Christian values,” said Ayers. “This is more than just a job for Jill. It’s her mission.” Between endless piles of paperwork, a constant stream of phone calls and time-consuming documentation, Jill’s job can be both stressful and overwhelming—but you’d never

know it. From offering advice and hands-on training to providing a constant source of positive energy, Jill makes everyone else’s day a little better. “Even when you know she is busy, she still manages to smile,” said Caitie Stineman, human resources director. “And Jill’s smile is contagious!” Thank you, Jill!
