“EARSP is a great social meeting in which you can mingle with other former and retired teachers. As an educator, upon retirement you may lose some of your contacts, but through EARSP these contacts can be maintained through the monthly lunch and learn opportunities,” said one attendee. EARSP is an affiliate of the Kansas Association of Retired School Personnel. The group was called the Kansas Retired Teachers Association from 1951 to 2001. The Emporia chapter was the second unit to organize in Kansas in 1956—no surprise for the hometown of Kansas State Teachers College, which now is known as Emporia State University. by readers of the Emporia Gazette in the newspaper’s recent “2018 Reader’s Choice Awards.”

The 15th Annual Readers’ Choice Awards, a contest which names the “best of the best” in Emporia and surrounding communities, ran for two weeks in May. Readers can choose their favorites on everything from senior care and best fried chicken to best auto repair and best florist—and everything in between. Winners are officially announced in a special section published by the newspaper annually. This is the seventh time Emporia Presbyterian Manor has won this award. “We are a 5-star rated community by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and on the U.S. News and World Report list of best nursing homes, but this recognition is special,” said Susan Siepelmeier, executive director. “Being on the Emporia Gazette’s Best of Emporia list means that the people we serve recognize the quality of care we provide.” For Jen Moran, life enrichment director, the award is also a testament to how well Presbyterian Manor functions as a unit. “We have a fantastic staff, made up of individuals who work hard to ensure that Presbyterian Manor runs efficiently, and that each resident receives excellent care,” said Jen. “Receiving the award means that we are noticed for the hard but gratifying work that we do, and for the fantastic relationships that have been developed between staff and residents.” BEST OF, continued on page 3

From director of social services Maria Lane’s perspective, the family environment is what sets Presbyterian Manor apart from the competition. “It’s the positive interactions and care that our residents receive from our nursing staff. Those make all the difference in the world to our residents. We treat them like family— they are important to us,” Maria said. Residents couldn’t agree more. Herb and Lorraine Morton said we probably won the award “because our staff is so friendly and our facility is well-maintained.” Kass Hollar, longtime independent living resident, added, “I love the staff and nurses that help us, they are so good. I like the activities including playing bridge.” For seniors who want to make Emporia Presbyterian Manor home, there are a variety of options for different levels of care. We offer independent and assisted living, and long-term care, as well as shortterm PATH rehabilitation. We also have a designated memory care neighborhood—all under one roof. Our mission is to provide quality senior services guided by Christian values inside our community, but also to be an advocate for seniors in the

Emporia community as a whole. Some seniors have a misconception about what life is like at Emporia Presbyterian Manor. Presbyterian Manor provides assistance with activities of daily living or housekeeping if needed, so residents can focus on the things that are important to them. This means residents no longer have to worry about home maintenance and other stressors. Emporia Presbyterian Manor provides peace of mind by offering priority access to residents when they need a greater level of care. It can be stressful to suddenly need care because of an

emergency. Planning ahead helps families avoid tough decision-making during an already difficult time. “We took the opportunity away from our kids to make the decision,” said independent living residents Carl and Jean Elliott. “We knew we wanted to be in control, so we made the decision to move to Emporia Presbyterian Manor to ensure that when we need the care, we will have it.” Don’t know which level of care you or your loved one may need? The retired teachers living at Emporia Presbyterian Manor have benefited from having EARSP hosted on our campus. One of these residents is Jim Calvert, a former physics professor. Another is Robert “Galen” Barrett, a former elementary school teacher who specialized in reading and taught at many levels, from kindergarten through eighth grade.

“I haven’t been attending EARSP meetings for a very long time, but the contacts I have been able to make are beneficial, and the speakers are current,” said Galen. Galen was previously invited to attend EARSP by Don Kile, a former orchestra teacher, but declined the offer. After becoming a resident at Presbyterian Manor, however, Galen was once again invited to attend and now does so routinely. Each month, a different speaker presents a timely topic on education.
