Artists of the month Visit our Atrium gallery throughout December to view works of art by our very own Resident Art Guild! This is a group of Emporia Presbyterian Manor residents who meet on a regular basis to paint, help one another with techniques, and socialize. We’re looking forward to seeing some of their recent pieces.

Building a tradition Resident’s ingenious Christmas “tree” displays collection Carl Elliott’s lack of space for holiday decorations has turned into a tradition enjoyed by all of us at Emporia Presbyterian Manor. Carl created the Christmas “tree” made of several levels of holiday-themed miniature houses. At the top is a nativity scene and silver star. The tree has been a welcome and festive addition to our main dining room for a number of Christmases. Carl started collecting the houses about 10 years ago. He and his wife, Jean, would display them under their Christmas tree. As Carl scooped up more of the miniatures - usually from yard sales — he added a shelf, placed the tree on top, and put houses on two levels. The collection grew more. Carl added more levels. Soon it was more houses than tree! He wanted to add lights, too, so he put his love of tinkering to work. “The challenge was to make it so I could light it.You can’t have extension cords running around and around,” Carl said. “I did a little thinking, and I realized the fan on your ceiling has a light in it. It works the same way.” Today, Carl’s Christmas tree stands about six feet tall. It has about 75 TRADITION, continued on page 3

Every Christmas season, Angel Trees are set up for anyone to make a donation to our Good Samaritan program. The program assists residents who have outlived their financial resources through no fault of their own.

They really do make a direct and positive impact in the daily life of our residents.” In 2016, more than 330 residents living in Presbyterian Manors of MidAmerica’s assisted living and health care neighborhoods were supported in some way through the Good Samaritan program. houses and miniature scenes. The shelves move on bearings around a center post, which contains the wires, and a low-power motor rotates the tree. “It takes about four minutes to make a rotation. It isn’t fast,” he said. “You don’t see it moving unless you look for it.”
When Carl and Jean moved to Presbyterian Manor, they discovered there wasn’t nearly enough room for the tree in their apartment. So they offered it up for the whole community to enjoy. Now, Carl said, employees start asking him in the fall when he’s going to put it up.

Emporia Presbyterian Manor named to 2017-18 U.S. News and World Report Best Nursing Home list The U.S. News and World Report list uses information from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the government agency that sets and enforces standards for nursing homes. CMS assigns one to five stars to each community for how well it performs in health inspections, nurse staffing and level of quality care. “Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America employees continue to focus their efforts on delivering quality care every day,” said PMMA President and CEO Bruce Shogren. “The five-star ratings confirm their good work.”

Report Best Nursing Homes list. Survey teams from the state conduct inspections in each community every 12 to 15 months. The surveys cover a checklist of about 180 items such as medication management, food preparation and delivery, proper paperwork, and resident enrichment activities. In addition to Emporia Presbyterian Manor, seven PMMA locations are on the honoree list with five-star ratings: Arkansas City, Lawrence, Newton, Parsons and Sterling in Kansas, and Farmington and Fulton in Missouri.
