Getting to know Social Services Director Maria Lane March is Social Work Month — “an opportunity for social workers across the country to turn the spotlight on the profession and highlight the important contributions they make to society,” according to the National Association of Social Workers. Many residents and their families know our director of social services, Maria Lane.Yet the role of a social worker in a senior living community is complex, and not everyone understands what it is that they do. Maria’s main responsibilities include assisting with admissions into our health care neighborhood, routine assessments, hospice discussions and contact with family members, visiting with families of prospective residents, addressing grievances, and initiating contact with home health agencies when needed. We asked Maria to share with us why she got involved in social work and what she likes about helping people at Emporia Presbyterian Manor. How did you get started as a social worker?
