Nurse Betty embarks on third consecutive decade at Emporia Presbyterian Manor
February marked an important milestone for nurse Betty Lauppe as she celebrated her 20th year on staff at Emporia Presbyterian Manor. Now entering her third decade at the community, Betty credits those she is surrounded by—and a sense of duty to those she serves—for keeping her going.
Our hard-working environmental services team is always up for the challenge. We are thankful for them!
Housekeeping, maintenance teams honored for commitment
“I enjoy working with the staff and residents but mostly, I just enjoy taking care of the residents and meeting their needs,” said Betty Lauppe Betty. Betty began her career on our campus as an aide in the health center but is currently an LPN on the assisted living floor where she has developed strong bonds with those she cares for. “You really get to know them and their routines,” said Betty. “I have a lot of fun with them.” While the coronavirus has wreaked havoc on the everyday lives of most of those in the health care industry, Betty says that she and her coworkers have been mostly spared, however the same cannot be said of the residents. “Not much has really changed about what we do, but it has definitely impacted the residents since they have had to stay inside,” said Betty. Away from work, Betty enjoys doing puzzles and meeting friends for coffee. She and her husband, David, have been married for 42 years and she is a mom to two children and three step-children. ◆
In September, staff members responsible for keeping Emporia Presbyterian Manor looking good and working well were celebrated during national Environmental Services Week. Collectively known as the Environmental Services (EVS) team, staff members were recognized for their teamwork, commitment and adaptability.
“Our EVS team is an ‘all hands on deck’ type of team,” said Caitie Stineman, human resource director at Emporia Presbyterian Manor. “They consistently meet the changes and demands for each day, whether planned or not.” TEAMS - continued on page 2

The group’s team-first mentality has been particularly on display during the coronavirus pandemic as they have risen to the challenge to keep everything within the community clean and sanitized. “The EVS team has met everything COVID has presented with a real can-do attitude,” said Caitie. “I truly believe that all Presbyterian Manor staff members have stepped up to meet the new demands of health care.” Beyond the dedication that members of the EVS team bring to their job, Caitie also stressed the important role they each play in the overall comfort and happiness of the community’s residents.

“I recently visited with a housekeeper who knew the ins and outs of exactly how a resident liked his room kept. She enjoyed making the resident’s apartment the most home-like that she could,” said Caitie. “That joy and fulfillment meant a lot to me and still encourages me to this day.” ◆

OUR MISSION: To provide quality senior services guided by Christian values.
Luminaria event shines a light on residents in need and honors family members during the holidays Our community’s annual Luminaria event will return this year as a way to raise funds for Presbyterian Manor’s Good Samaritan Program and also honor family members during the holidays. “This year’s Luminaria event is even more important because it helps maintain little pieces of normalcy and celebrate the loved ones in our lives, especially when we can’t hug them or see them often right now,” said Sarah Oenning, vice president in PMMA’s Department of Giving. The luminarias consist of Ball® jars filled with small lights and a photocell battery on the lid that absorbs the sun’s rays during the day and turns the lights on at night. The jars hook on to the top of shepherd hooks and are placed along the sidewalk on the southwest corner of campus. At 5:30 p.m. on December 5, the Luminaria dedication ceremony will take place virtually on the Emporia Presbyterian Manor Facebook page and will feature several speakers who will discuss the significance of the luminarias and the impact the Good Samaritan Program has on our residents.
Luminaria will light the path around the southwest corner of campus. The luminarias can be purchased for $25 each to honor a family member, whose name will be written on a tag placed on each luminaria.
You can watch live at www.facebook.com\EmporiaPresbyterianManorPMMA.
All funds will go to the Good Samaritan Program, which provides funding to assist residents who outlive their financial resources through no fault of their own.
“We invite everyone to join us on December 5 to virtually celebrate all loved ones honored by this event and also kick-off the holiday season with carols,” said Crystal Stock, marketing director.
“I give to Emporia Presbyterian Manor’s Luminaria event because they’re like family. They have been there through many important parts of my life. And when I see the residents and I see the mission
at work, I want to be a part of that, and I want to give to that. I want to make sure that it’s here for the next generation of seniors and for the next generation of employees,” said Sarah. To purchase a luminaria, contact Crystal at 620-343-2613 or go online to https://giving.presbyterianmanors.org/upcoming-events/ and locate the luminaria project. Your support will go to a very worthy cause—one that has allowed PMMA to proudly say it has never asked a resident to leave based on their inability to pay. ◆
