Bob Doudican

Of all of Bob Doudican’s achievements, family comes first From traveling the world to his involvement in the Emporia community, resident Bob Doudican has experienced a number of accomplishments. But his family is what he’s proud of most of all. Bob and his wife Ann have lived at the Emporia Presbyterian Manor for a couple of years, but their connection with our community goes back much longer—Ann was always very involved with Presbyterian Manor before serving on the mission committee, which she did before moving here and continues to do so. The Doudicans have three children, Bobby, Barbie and Becky. Bobby owns a local, well-known BBQ restaurant, “Bobby D’s,” Barbie is a teacher in Emporia and Becky works for the local Department for DOUDICAN - continued on page 2

Children and Families. Between them, Bob and Ann have seven grandchildren and 12 greatgrandchildren.

The parade used to be in front of the auditorium and before there were speakers to announce the event, someone would stand on every corner with a walkie-talkie to tell the crowd what was happening. Because the parade was religiously affiliated, there wasn’t a Santa Claus at the end.

While family is Bob’s pride and joy, coming in second of proud accomplishments is creating the parade we now know as Emporia’s annual Christmas parade. When his children were small, Bob had an idea to start a religiously affiliated Christmas parade downtown for his children to experience. He remembers calling all of the businesses the first year. He and Ann weren’t sure anyone would show up. The night before the parade there was such a crowd, everyone had come to celebrate and

Over the course of 2018, a sampling of Presbyterian Manor’s residents and their families participated in monthly telephone interviews that include open-ended questions, as well the opportunity to rate Presbyterian Manor in specific categories. “The Customer Experience Award

His work as a representative for a printing equipment company sent him around the world. the U.S., from one side of Canada to the other, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, Russia, Japan, England, Ireland, Germany and Jamaica. Of all the places he traveled, Kenya was Bob’s favorite. Ann accompanied Bob on a number of his trips—and when she wasn’t racking up the frequent flyer miles, she acquired beautiful blankets made of fabric from Casa Blanca, Morocco, that Bob would bring home to her. Bob and Ann Doudican are a gracious couple who have given back so much to not only Emporia Presbyterian Manor, but also Emporia and Emporia Presbyterian church. We are so glad they are a part of our Presbyterian Manor family. ◆

OUR MISSION: To provide quality senior services guided by Christian values.

Why Walk to End Alzheimer’s? On Sunday, October 6, our community will participate in the annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s at the Lyon County Fairgrounds. This event is more than just exercise and camaraderie, it’s about providing support and hope. “Aside from supporting the Alzheimer’s organization that provides great services to the Emporia community and our campus here at Emporia Presbyterian Manor, we also desire to seek a cure for the disease and fund further research and development. We see the struggle

with Alzheimer’s first-hand and do all we can to support and love our residents and their families, but we also long for a day that Alzheimer’s is no longer a disease that impacts the folks we care for each day,” said Crystal Stock, marketing director at Emporia Presbyterian Manor. From education to participation, Presbyterian Manor goes the distance for this annual event. “Last year, we were honored with holding the flower representing an organization that wishes to support the mission of the Alzheimer’s organization, and we will continue

to provide this support in whatever ways we can. I personally serve on the committee for the Walk To End Alzheimer’s and help raise awareness for the walk as well as educate people on its importance and significance in the community. We sponsor the walk each year, and starting last year, we had a table on walk day where we offered education and support services as well as passed out sweet treats. We plan to do this again this year,” said Crystal. ◆

Staff spotlight: Jessica Goodwin Since joining the staff at Emporia Presbyterian Manor eight years ago, Jessica Goodwin has moved up the ranks from dishwasher to her new title of chef/production manager. “When I was hired, I started out as a part-time server at night. As time went on, I just kept moving up—dishwasher, full-time server on dayshift, cook and then baker. I have done every position in the kitchen, and I’ve also done many catering events over the years. And now, here I am as the chef and it’s very exciting,” said Jessica. In her new role, Jessica is involved with computer work such as

inventory, ordering and online training. She also manages the staff and daily operations. And she is involved in some exciting new projects on campus, too. “Right now, I’m working on a new, always available menu for the residents. It’s called 2300 Bistro—2300 because that’s the address of the Presbyterian Manor and Bistro is what we call the main dining room. Also, we are working on a new puree program,” said Jessica. Jessica loves to read “any and everything” and has a passion for learning — which she’s getting to do at work. “The Presbyterian Manor has given me the opportunity for growth.

I also have a great mentor who happens to be a chef and director— Johny Pawtary. I am learning a lot from him and hope to continue to grow,” said Jessica. At home, Jessica is a single mother of three amazing little girls, ages 7, 6 and 5. Congratulations on your recent promotion, Jessica! ◆
