PMMA rebalances portfolio with sale of Kansas City campus In the more than six and a half decades Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America has provided care for and advocated for the aging in Kansas and Missouri, the senior retirement landscape has changed dramatically. PMMA remains committed to our mission of providing quality senior services guided by Christian values and to meeting the ever changing needs of today’s seniors. Seniors want a full continuum of care, with an emphasis on active living and wellness. Out of this demand, the Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) model was born. This model provides for a large independent living level with smaller levels of assisted living and health care/ skilled nursing. During the past two decades, PMMA has been slowly moving its system toward the CCRC model. Even though we have made significant strides, our system still remains imbalanced in the world of CCRC’s. Walk to End Alzheimer’s returns “Celebration” is not a word used very often in connection with Alzheimer’s disease. But the atmosphere of the annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s is undeniably celebratory, as people come together for the common purpose of supporting their loved ones, as well as research to find a cure. For the first time in five years, the celebration will take place again in Farmington. The walk has taken place in Festus for that time. This year, it has evolved into two walks: one here and one in Arnold. “We outgrew our home in Festus, and we also think by hosting it in Farmington, we’ll be able to grow it as a more regional event,” said Greg Scuito of the Alzheimer’s Association, who is chairperson of the local events. The walk is Aug. 27 at Farmington High School. The overall goal for this WALK, continued on page 2

Upon a careful analysis of our properties, it became clear that the Kansas City campus, with its predominantly health care focused model, could not easily convert to a CCRC campus. After much analysis, deliberation and discussion with the senior leadership team, the Board of Trustees approved the sale of KCPM.
event is to have 35 teams with more than 300 participants and to raise $25,000. Scuito said fundraising was already going very well. “I am supremely confident we will surpass that goal,” he said. “For a first-year event it’s a large task, but I’ve seen a lot of support in the community. We still need people to help spread the word.”
While saddened by the idea of selling KCPM, PMMA was and is confident that we are leaving our residents in good hands. The sale of Kansas City Presbyterian Manor to Riverbend, an operating subsidiary of The Ensign Group Inc., was completed and the campus transferred, on July 1.
Nationwide, the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s takes place in more than 600 communities. It is the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. Scuito says it also helps to fight the stigma that can still exist around dementia
and Alzheimer’s – and it’s a way to alleviate the isolation so common among caregivers. “There’s really not a person I talk to in the community who doesn’t have a story to share about their connection to the disease,” he said. “That’s why organizations like Presbyterian Manor and our friends in the community are so important. They can help folks who are a little hesitant to come outside of their four walls to see the support they have.” Scuito said he is always struck by the cheerful mood at the walk. “There isn’t a picture we take at the walk that isn’t filled with smiles. It can be a freeing experience.”
