Volunteers of the year Every spring, we celebrate the volunteers who provide essential support to our staff and our residents at Farmington Presbyterian Manor. At this year’s volunteer banquet we honored two standouts who have contributed so much to our community: resident Robert Conway and community member Jane Barton. We asked Robert and Jane to tell us a little about themselves, so you can meet the people who meet the needs of others. Robert Conway, resident volunteer of the year

Robert joined us here at Presbyterian Manor three years ago, soon after his wife developed Alzheimer’s disease. Robert Robert Conway grew up in the Farmington area, but had not lived here since he left for the Air Force at age 18. He spent 20 years in the military, then another 23 years with the postal service. When his wife’s symptoms worsened, friends back

On May 5, we celebrated Cinco De Mayo with a Fiesta Bash. Local singer Jody Coffman did a fantastic job entertaining for the party.  Residents enjoyed a nice variety of Mexican snacks while singing along to Jody with their sombreros and maracas.

For the fifth day of National Nursing Home Week, we celebrated with a Hawaiian luau.  The residents wore colorful leis and the ladies wore flowers in their hair.  Unfortunately, the rain caused us to have the event indoors, but it was still a great time. Nurse Bob Turnbaugh even entertained everyone for a few songs. On May 10, we had a performance from Jim-N-I during National Nursing Home Week.  Jim-N-I is a duo with John Lodholz (drums, washboard and vocals) and Jim Burhmeister (guitar, harmonica and vocals).  The residents always enjoy hearing the unique original songs as well as their covers of great songs.  WEEK, continued on page 2

Thank you to Jim-N-I for your wonderful entertainment. On May 11 during National Nursing Home Week, we celebrated with a western-themed Day.  The residents enjoyed a Shoot the Can game, as well as square dancing.  The employees played a competitive game of horse stick racing for the residents to watch. For lunch the residents had burgers, barbecue chicken, coleslaw and beans. Thank you to everyone who helped us celebrate Nationa Nursing Home Week!

in Missouri suggested to Robert that he look into memory care at Presbyterian Manor. Since then, Robert has reprised his mail carrier role, delivering mail to Presbyterian Manor residents twice a week. On Fridays, he makes shopping trips to local stores to pick up items on residents’ shopping lists. Helping out is a way to occupy his time, Robert said, between daily visits to his wife. While her decline has been difficult, his love for her is plain to see. Jane Barton, community volunteer of the year For 17 years, Jane has been wellknown to residents for her steady presence in the gift shop. In fact, she also recruited most of the other volunteers who work there, including one of her best friends, who moved to Presbyterian Manor. Jane first got involved as a way to serve residents who used to attend her church, and she kept right on helping as needed. Her husband, Don, said she routinely buys a great deal of tickets for Presbyterian Manor fundraisers, such as the chicken and dumplings dinner, then gives them away to friends and family. Serving others has really been a way of life for Jane, from the time she started teaching elementary school. She also served on Presbyterian Manor’s advisory council and with the Southeast Missouri Family Violence Council. Volunteering “makes me aware that other people have needs that can’t be provided,” she said. Jane didn’t know she had won volunteer of the year until her name Like us on Facebook

was called at the banquet. Her sister-in-law accompanied her, and Don snuck in later to capture the moment. “She turned around and I was 10 or 12 feet behind her with a camera in my hand. She said, ‘What are you doing here?’” When she realized what was happening, she said she didn’t deserve it. But we disagree. When people like Jane, and like Robert, give so much for so long, it’s the least we can do to say thank you.
