Banquet honors active volunteers On April 19, Farmington Presbyterian Manor hosted its annual volunteer banquet to recognize individuals who selflessly donated their time and talents to help meet the needs of residents during the past 12 months. The theme for this year’s event was “Being a Blessing.” Executive Director Jane Hull felt this theme was especially appropriate, given the role volunteers play in the community’s ability to fulfill PMMA’s mission of providing quality senior services guided by Christian values. “Our volunteers are a true godsend,” said Hull. “Without them, and their commitment to those we serve, our community would not be the same.” Those in attendance at the event, which was held during National Volunteer Week, were treated to a gourmet dinner, remarks from staff members, and a special performance by guitarist and singer Stormy Bennett. “It was a great evening for us to celebrate them, say thank you and recognize them for the time they give to PMMA,” said Volunteer VOLUNTEER, continued on page 2

For Karen Crews, nursing is both a calling and a reward at PMMA When she was younger, Karen Crews would often sit and listen to her grandmother tell stories about her life as a nurse. The tales both captivated and inspired Karen, eventually leading her to pursue her own career in health care. Today, Karen is an RN supervisor at Farmington Presbyterian Manor, where she provides rehabilitation services to individuals who have recently been released from the hospital after a surgery or illness. “My job is to assess our patients on a daily basis and monitor them for any complications,” said Karen. “I make sure they are making progress and keep them from being re-admitted to the hospital. My goal is to help them return home as soon as possible.” KAREN, continued on page 4

As the event concluded, the volunteers in attendance were given a certificate of appreciation and a small PMMA watering can that held potting soil and flower seeds, representing the lives they had nurtured.

When she’s not working in rehabilitation, Karen supervises the community’s day-shift nurses, jumping in whenever she’s needed to ensure each resident is happy, well taken care of and safe—a job she says is made easy because of the compassionate care of those she works with.
One of the other aspects of the job that brings Karen joy are the relationships she gets to build with those she treats.
“There is just not a lot I have to do—all of the nurses care for our residents as much as I do,” Karen says.
“I absolutely love the opportunity to visit with the residents, hear their stories and make new friends,” said Karen. “I can honestly say that they bring much more joy to me than I ever do to them.”
