Anita Alsup, 83, of Ste. Genevieve recently took home the top prize in the professional division of Presbyterian Manors’ Art is Ageless® competition for her painting, “Grateful.” The painting, which depicts a friend and local restaurant owner, was selected not only because of the high degree of technical ability it exhibits, but the warmth and humanity revealed in its subject matter—something the artist strives for in all of her work.

that shows their personality. That’s what I look for. That’s what inspires me,” said Anita. “I’m always looking for the muse that inspires a painting.” For “Grateful,” that muse actually ended up being a photograph that was taken of the subject before heading out to a special event. “She has this free spirit personality, and I had looked at different photographs to find the one that most portrayed that spirit,” said Anita. “When I saw that one, I knew this was it. It’s so her. I know she was grateful for that day and that memory—sometimes I like to connect a special memory, a day that’s special that you’ll never forget.” This isn’t the first time Anita has been recognized through the Art is Ageless competition. She has previously been awarded “Best of Show” in the Farmington competition along with the “Judge’s Choice” award and another “First

Staff spotlight: Martha Walker While some might find the night shift lonely, Martha enjoys the solitude. “It’s quieter. You’re by yourself, and not much commotion goes on,” said Martha. Prior to joining the community, Martha spent eight years as the head housekeeper at a motel, and 16 years working in a factory. However, she says that she has enjoyed her time at Farmington Presbyterian Manor the most. In honor of National Healthcare Environmental Services and Housekeeping Week, September 9 to 15, we would like to take a moment to shine the spotlight on Martha Walker, who in December will be celebrating 10 years as a member of Farmington Presbyterian Manor’s housekeeping team.
“I enjoy working here. It’s one of the nicest places I’ve worked,” Martha said. “I just like helping people.”
Interacting with the community’s residents is another part of the job Martha enjoys. “I have one resident who enjoys folding bibs, so I take them to her,” said Martha. “She gets a kick out of it, and it keeps her occupied. She says it gives her something to do.” Martha enjoys going to flea markets, antiquing and fishing. But most of all, she likes spending time with her family, which includes her husband of 48 years, Tony, her four children, numerous grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

It’s wonderful,” said Anita. “I’m grateful to PMMA for giving artists over 65 an incentive to pursue art or hobbies.” Anita is currently working on a new project—a painting commissioned Like us on Facebook
by her son that’s based on a favorite photograph of the two of them standing in front of the Fox Theatre prior to attending a performance of “Jersey Boys.” “There’s so much background so it’s very labor intensive,” said Anita. “I’ve finally gotten to the point where it’s developing and I’m so excited about it. It’s challenging, and we need challenges.”
