JoAnn Newman remembered for her kindness and generosity By Sarah Griggs, Executive Director

It’s no secret that JoAnn Newman loved her community. JoAnn’s passion for arts, education and church was inspiring. Since her passing, she has left an indelible footprint in Cowley County and Arkansas City. Proudly, Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor is among the many charities JoAnn touched. “We are honored to have JoAnn as a resident, but to know she remembered us in her estate plans is extraordinary,” says Sarah Griggs, executive director. “When I remember JoAnn and how much she cared about her community, it reminds me of a pie. She made sure there were enough slices to support the many charities that had a special place in her heart.” Before moving to Arkansas City Presbyterian JoAnn Newman Manor, JoAnn joined in at Presbyterian Manor events including the annual Valentine dance. She and good friend Lowell Smith would dance the night away. Friend Margaret Wahlborg remembers JoAnn, “she was such a sweet person, a joy to be around. She was always kind and generous.” JoAnn was special and her commitment to share so many slices of her estate with so many organizations illustrates her careful planning and desire to make a difference. We talk to many supporters of Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor who worry that leaving a gift in their will to Presbyterian Manor may jeopardize their family’s well-being. The pie analogy comes in handy. You dictate the serving sizes. You can ensure that your loved ones get the biggest portion of your estate. You can also make sure your family gets served first.

With the end of the year rapidly approaching, it’s a great time to check one more thing off your list — make sure your wishes are respected and your family is protected by completing our Assignment of Amounts Due Resident Form (or reviewing your current Assignment form to make sure it is still correct). If you pass away while a resident of a PMMA® Community, this form will permit you to assign all refunds due to you to the persons specified in your form. Completing the Assignment form is simple, and if you pass away while a resident of the Community, it can save your family significant time, money and frustration when receiving a refund of any amounts due to you from your PMMA Community. In other words, it can simplify the refund process and avoid the time and cost of estate administration. This form works like a “beneficiary designation” in that it is effective upon your passing and permits you to designate who will receive all amounts due to you from your PMMA Community (for example, any refunds of your entrance fee deposit or monthly fees). Your Assignment form is revocable and can be changed at any time, so you are not locked if your circumstances change. Your beneficiaries may include individuals, charities, or others (including a will or trust so that your refund passes pursuant to your estate

Independent living offers comfort, familiarity for Elsie Tipton For some people, making the decision to move to an independent living community can be a difficult one to make. But when the time came for Elsie Tipton, she didn’t have to give it a second thought. “When my doctor suggested Ark City Presbyterian Manor, I jumped at the chance because I knew a number of people living there,” said Elsie. Prior to coming to the community, Elsie had been living at home, taking care of her husband, Bob, when she began having heart problems. Following open-heart surgery in 2015, her health began to go downhill, which is when her doctor gave her an ultimatum. “Before being released, he told me that I needed to make some lifestyle changes, or else I was going to end up back in the hospital,” said Elsie. Following her doctor’s advice, both Elsie and Bob moved into Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor. With Bob receiving the around-theclock care he needed, Elsie was finally able to focus on her own health and recuperated to the point that she could have returned home, but ultimately decided to stay. “I chose to stay because I didn’t have to worry about what to cook for meals. I could cook if I wanted to, and I enjoyed visiting with the other residents and the super kind staff,”

said Elsie. “They took away all the stress of daily living.” Among the members of the staff who were looking after Elsie, was her very own granddaughter, Cammy Boone, who is the community’s director of nursing.

“I have actually recommended this place to several others that have moved in, including my mother-inlaw and uncle,” said Elsie. “Furthermore, I have had three great-granddaughters who have worked for Presbyterian Manor.”

“Before the virus, I was even able to babysit my great-grandchildren and later on my great-greatgranddaughter,” said Elsie.

Between the amenities she’s provided on a daily basis and being surrounded by loved ones, Elsie couldn’t imagine living anywhere else.

And that’s not the only family member Elsie has at the community. Her sister Vi Elliott-Beyer moved in toward the beginning of 2021 and she has had numerous family members who have been a part of the community in the past.

“For my stage in life, God couldn’t have provided a better place to live until he calls me home to heaven,” said Elsie. “Living at Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor makes me feel like a queen for a day every day!” u

Work of local artist to appear in 2022 Art is Ageless® calendar For the second straight year, the work of Arkansas City artist Janice Hale has been selected as a masterpiece-level winner in PMMA’s Art is Ageless® juried art competition. The piece appears in the 2022 calendar. The piece, entitled “Indian Woman,” utilizes a time-consuming technique called stippling in which an artist uses varying densities of small ink dots to create texture and shading. “I looked it up on the Internet and thought I had enough time that I could probably do it,” said Janice. All told, the drawing took Janice approximately three months to complete, although she admits she didn’t work on it full time. “It said on the Internet that if you got tired, your dots would look

sloppy, so I only worked on it 10 to 15 minutes at a time. Then, to get the shading right, I’d look at it, re-look at it and then go back over it,” said Janice. Janice originally learned about the Art is Ageless® program from her boss, whose husband was a resident at Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor—although it took the additional prompting of her sister to get her to actually enter. “I think it’s really great. Even if you don’t win anything, it’s nice to have a variety of art,” said Janice. “If someone has a gift, what else are you

Newman – continued from page 1 Here is how: Instead of a fixed amount, consider leaving Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor a percentage of your estate or of specific assets. That way, your charitable gift will adjust according to future circumstances, and gifts to loved ones will remain proportional—no matter how your estate fluctuates. Here are two ways to do it: Gift a percentage of your estate to ACPM in your will. Leave ACPM a percentage of your residual estate (the portion of your estate that remains after all gifts and bequests have been made and all claims of the estate are satisfied).

Left to right: Otis Morrow (friend/executor); Sarah Griggs, executive director; Lowell Smith (friend of Newman)

The great thing about gifts from your will is that they are flexible: You can change your mind at any time. Just know that whatever you settle on, a gift to ACPM does not have to be large—every slice makes a difference. Save a slice for Arkansas City

Presbyterian Manor. Even a small piece of your estate makes an impact. Contact Sarah Oenning at 316-652-6222 or soenning@pmma.org to learn more about supporting Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor while serving family first. u

Assignment form – continued from page 1 plan). You may designate the portion of your refund payable to each of them. Some things to think about: • Who should receive my refund — certain named individuals, charities, or my will or trust? • If I have more than one beneficiary, should they receive equal shares of my refund or should I designate different amounts/percentages among them? • Do I want to designate a successor beneficiary to receive the amount originally allocated to a beneficiary who predeceases me? Absent a valid Assignment form, the payment of your refund may be delayed until an estate is opened or other legal proceedings are completed designating who is legally entitled to request the refund and receive payment. Unfortunately, that happens all-to-frequently and we want to help our residents and their families avoid that unpleasant (and sometimes expensive and time consuming) experience.
