Find a treasure at Presbyterian Village annual auction
Chances are, you have heard of Fort Scott Presbyterian Village’s Annual Dinner and Auction. Every May, the not-for-profit retirement community offers a delicious dinner from Chicken Annie’s and a live and silent auction. You have probably heard that it is a casual, upbeat evening of fun and excitement! What you may not know is why this event is held. “All of the proceeds directly benefit our residents at Fort Scott Presbyterian Village who have a financial need,” said Executive Director Ginger Nance. “As a Christian based, mission-driven community, Presbyterian Village provides care for those who call us home, even if they should outlive their personal financial resources.” The annual dinner and auction is the largest fundraiser for Presbyterian Village’s Good Samaritan Program, which helps these residents. The Good Samaritan Program depends solely on donations from friends and supporters of Presbyterian Village. “As our residents age, their needs change and their resources may dwindle. As a result, some come to rely on government programs, which do not keep pace with escalating costs. Presbyterian Village’s Good Samaritan Program fills in that gap. It is through support from local citizens to the Good Samaritan Program that we are able to ensure our residents’ peace of mind that they will receive continued, assisted living, quality care year after year in our setting.” Ginger said. You can help raise money for the Good Samaritan Program while at the same time enjoying good food and a fun auction at this year’s Village fundraiser on Wednesday, May 17, at 2401 S. Horton. In addition to the Chicken Auction Sneak Peek Our Annual Good Annie’s dinner, there will Samaritan Dinner and Auction is coming up on May 17, be two drawings for a trip Fundraiser continued on page 2

Fort Scott Presbyterian Village’s Art is AgelessŽ exhibit and reception features senior artists
Since the beginning of time, creative expression has brought joy to both its creators and those who experience their art. The Art is AgelessÂŽ program offers senior artists the opportunity to share and display their artwork and reaffirms the agelessness of human creativity. Some have resumed art after putting it aside for a career, others have been creating beautiful pieces throughout their lives, and others never picked up a brush until after they retired, but all are now expressing themselves through art. This month, their works are on display at Fort Scott Presbyterian Village. The entry deadline is April 6. ÂŽ

“It’s inspiring to see the beautiful pieces these seniors have created, said Anicia Robinson, life enrichment director. “The joy it brings to them and others is wonderful, and that’s something we want to celebrate and share with the entire Fort Scott community. The Art is Ageless exhibit will feature works from local artists who are 65 and older, including a few Presbyterian Village residents. The public is welcome to visit the community to view the exhibit of acrylics, oils, photography and various other mediums, ranging from amateur to professional levels. The exhibit is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., April 14 through 24. In addition to the exhibit, Presbyterian
Village will honor local senior artists during a reception at the community at 4 p.m., Friday, April 21. The Art is Ageless program has been encouraging creativity in seniors for more than 35 years, and is sponsored by Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America (PMMA), which is a nonprofit organization that owns and operates 17 senior living communities in Missouri and Kansas. Each year the organization publishes an Art is Ageless calendar, featuring works by amateur senior artists. Proceeds from the sale of calendars are reinvested into new art programs and opportunities for PMMA residents.

to Santa Fe, NM. This could be huge for the lucky winner, as it is one of two trips we will have. Advance dinner tickets are just $8.50, and that includes a homemade dessert and beverage. Tickets may be available at the door for $10.00, but don’t delay to ensure your meal, as we usually sell out the day of the event. Dinner is served from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. and drive through carry out is available if you cannot stay for the fun. Tickets for an opportunity to win the trip are available for a suggested donation of $5 each or three tickets for $10. The auction will again feature a wide rane of items large and small, new and used, bargains and heirlooms. At least one tractor and mower is expected to be sold as well as many outdoors items. There will be something there to fit everyone’s budget. Nance auction service will return to entertain the crowd with their auctioneering prowess. A silent auction also will be held on selected items and a buy it now area will be available. The auction begins at 5 p.m. Items will be available for viewing during the day on May 17. See www.nanceauctionservice.com for a listing of live auction items. Call Fort Scott Presbyterian Village at 620-223-5550 or email gnance@pmma.org for more information. Tickets are available by mail, at the Presbyterian Village or at most of the local banks in advance.
Presidential surprise for Presbyterian Village
Life Enrichment Director Anicia Robinson is always thinking of new and interesting ways to engage our residents. Last September, she came up with an idea to show our appreciation for the men and women who responded to the Sept. 11 terror attacks. “It was a major event for our country, and it’s the right thing to do to continue honoring and thanking those who responded or who were involved in the rebuilding process,” said Anicia. “I got a group of tenants together, and we found a list of all the fire departments that went to help, including those

in NewYork City, and even some first responders from Fort Scott who went to help afterward! We sent letters to senators, to George W. Bush, who was president during that time, and to the (then) current White House.” Anicia and the residents sent approximately 60 letters and didn’t anticipate much of a response, if any. Their intention was simply to say thanks, but what they received back was certainly a surprise.
“Imagine our surprise when we received a letter back from none other than President Barack Obama! We were all thrilled!”

News of the presidential correspondence made the Fort Scott Tribune, and Presbyterian Village tenants enjoyed a bit of fame.
“It was nice to be recognized in that way, but we would have done it regardless,” said Anicia. “We do these things to enrich the lives of our tenants, and this was one creative activity to do just that!”
