Celebrating art at Fort Scott Presbyterian Village Aside from being known for providing quality senior services guided by Christian values to residents, Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America is synonymous with celebrating the timeless enjoyment of the arts.
The Art is Ageless® program encourages Presbyterian Manors of MidAmerica residents and other area seniors to express their creativity through an annual art competition and exhibit, musical and dramatic events, educational opportunities and current events discussions.
Every month, we celebrate and display the work of a local artist in our lobby. “I was contacted by Presbyterian Village in Fort Scott and asked if I would like to hang some paintings for a month. I said I would be happy to. I have a private studio located on my pecan farm about 10 miles from Fort Scott. I give private lessons four days a week,” said Susie. “I have learned a lot and struggled with painting over the years, and now I want to teach others what it took me so long to learn. You have to Susie Kimmell exhibited some of her artwork find the right teacher that in our lobby during the month of July. speaks your language to understand at least some of what there is to know to become a successful painter.” CELEBRATING continued on page 3 July Artist: Susie Kimmell

world is always changing. About every six months, Microsoft comes out with something new. John is certified with Microsoft and has done work for Gates computer and Walmart, along with many other businesses because he says, “It is hard to find someone that is certified in Microsoft.”
John will be at Fort Scott Presbyterian Village for a Just Ask event at 10 a.m. on August 14. He will share how you can keep your information safe on your computer, cell phone, iPad and your vehicle and how to keep from getting hacked through Bluetooth connections. These connections are part of the Internet of Things (IoT), the network
of physical devices, vehicles, home appliances and other items embedded with electronics, software, sensors and connectivity which enable these devices to connect and exchange data.
While they can save time and effort, these devices can be susceptible to malicious software and endanger your personal information. The number of IoT devices increased 31% year-overyear to 8.4 billion in 2017 and it is estimated that there will be 30 billion devices by 2020. John also will provide information on how to handle scams with phone calls and any other IoT (Internet of Things) device. John is a wealth of information so come with questions you may have for him.

Susie, who lives in Nevada, Mo., was born and raised in Tulsa, Okla., and developed a taste for art in grade school. Susie quit producing art in 6th grade when her abilities fell short of her vision but picked it up again a few years down the road.
Minnie Lou Allen is the guest artist this month. Her work will be in the lobby throughout the month of August.
“It wasn’t until I was a student at Cottey College in Nevada, Mo., that I fell in love with art again. After receiving a two-year degree, I attended Pittsburg State University where I earned a B.F.A. degree in studio art.”
“I started when I was very young. “I would tell someone who wants to try art, ‘Just take some paper and pencils or even crayons or brushes and just start working. Just do what you can. Don’t even think about it. Put some marks on the paper and start going. Don’t have any fear, because you can always throw it away. Just do what you can and keep working,’” said Minnie. Minnie enjoys the social opportunities at Presbyterian Village, and is settling in well after moving here in April.
“Everyone here is so nice. I enjoy being with people. And I enjoy talking about art with others. To me, art is a form of relaxation. It’s fun, and it’s nothing to get uptight about. It’s a form of enjoyment. People should just forget their fear and go for it!” FORT SCOTT PRESBYTERIAN VILLAGE

Thanks to a grant from the Fort Scott Area Community Foundation (FSACF), we were able to expand our Therapeutic Garden at Presbyterian Village.Volunteers and tenants worked to complete the improvements, including planting vegetables in newly rebuilt raised beds. FSACF serves to fulfill the philanthropic goals that benefit the common good and improve quality of life by providing leadership and programming that is responsive to the interest and needs of the residents of the Fort Scott area. If you would like to get involved to contribute toward continued improvements to the therapeutic garden, please contact Ginger Nance, Executive Director at gnance@pmma.org or call 620-223-5550.
