Fort Scott Presbyterian Village honored for achievements
Fort Scott Presbyterian Village was recognized with an Emerald Award Level One from Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America for reaching goals in fiscal year 2018, July 1, 2017, through June 30, 2018.
Fort Scott Presbyterian Village received an Emerald Award for 2018.
The recognition came through PMMA’s Emerald Awards Program, designed to encourage its 17 locations and two hospices to achieve high levels of resident and employee satisfaction, meet financial goals, build philanthropic support for the organization’s mission and meet marketing goals. There are 11 areas measured for the Emerald Awards.
To receive an emerald, a community has to meet its goals in all 11 areas. Team members from the community attended PMMA’s annual Emerald Award Banquet Dec. 6 at the Broadview Hotel in Wichita to accept the award. “We are pleased to present Fort Scott Presbyterian Village with its first Emerald Award. This recognition is a visible sign of the Fort Scott team’s commitment to the mission of PMMA of providing quality senior services guided by Christian values,” said Bruce Shogren, chief executive officer for PMMA.

Fort Scott Presbyterian Village resident Edith Collins was in nursing school during World War ll. At that time, the nurses in college automatically became part of the Nurse Corps. Edith was in nursing school from 1942 to 1945. She was prepared in her heart to go overseas and assist the soldiers. Luckily the war ended the same year she graduated from nurse’s school, so she “didn’t have to go and the boys got to come home to their families.” Edith filled out the entry to the Fort Scott Veterans Day parade with no intention of winning the grand marshal designation, but that’s exactly what happened.

“I really like to decorate Christmas trees, and this is something I did at home. I’m glad I didn’t have to miss out on this tradition now that I’ve moved here. In fact, we had a lot of trees up here, and it’s something I was excited about volunteering to do!”
Fond fundraising memories
Christmas may be behind us, but we remember fondly the sweet success of our soup supper and bake sale. We wanted to help the community by raising money for families in need, and with the help of Fred Hixon, our maintenance director who served as auctioneer, we did! Thank you to all of those who attended the soup supper and auction, and to those who donated.

New Year reflections and resolutions
January brings a new year and a time to reflect on the past one. It also lets us focus on new goals and dreams for the year to come.
Here are a few ideas for those of you who like to set NewYear’s resolutions: ✿Spend more time with friends and family. ✿Do 30 minutes of exercise or walk on a daily basis to help relieve stress. ✿Try to add more fruits and vegetables into your diet. ✿Drink more water: at least 8 8-oz glasses a day. ✿Go to bed earlier; studies show that it is recommend we get an average of 8 hours of sleep each night. ✿Spark your brain by learning something new every day. ✿Start a meditation program where you take time out of your busy life to relax and unwind. ✿Pick up a hobby or restart a hobby you didn’t have time to do before retirement. ✿Make a calendar and send out birthday cards to your family and friends. ✿Volunteer: many organizations are looking for volunteers, so invest your time in others! 4 COMMUNITY MATTERS JANUARY 2019
