Mowens celebrate 74 years of marriage

July 2018

Wib and Mae Mowen then and now.

Wilbur (Wib) and Mae Mowen met at church in January 1944 in Pennsylvania. Wib came home from the Navy on weekends in order to get to know Mae better. “It was love at first sight for me. I did look at other girls briefly, but they were never as beautiful as Mae,” Wib says.

Mae and Wib officially dated for 19 days before they got married in July of 1944. Wib was deployed right after the wedding.

Their daughter Jeannie was born in May of 1945. Wib was on a ship in the middle of the ocean when Jeannie was born. He received a telegraph that states, “Mother and daughter are doing well” which is still framed on his wall in their bedroom. The Mowens had 4 children Jeannie, Wilbur, Rick and Ned Harry. Unfortunately, Ned Harry passed shortly after he was born. He is buried in

Portsmith, Virginia. They are now blessed with nine grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and four greatgreat grandchildren. Wib and Mae will happily celebrate their 74th wedding anniversary on July 22. When asked the secret to their successful marriage they both stated quickly, “God!”

“From the moment I was born, my mother took me to church. Church and God have always been in the center of my life. When I met my wife at church, I knew it was the plan God had for me. I took my children

to church just as soon as they were born and raised them to always take everything to prayer,” said Wib. “God has given me and my family musical talent. I play the bass guitar, Mae and Jeannie play the piano and both of my boys play lead guitar. I have done everything in church from collecting the offering to leading the music to teaching classes. The only one thing I haven’t done was preach to a congregation. However, I do share my faith with others, so in a sense, maybe I do preach on some level.” How did Mae and Wib handle the hard times in life, especially during years of hard financial times and some difficult losses? Mae answered, “We never went to bed angry at each other, we always talk out the problem, then we give each other a good night kiss.”

Wib stated, “The only time in our marriage I was not able to kiss Mae goodnight was when I was deployed overseas.”

When he returned, he was reassigned and they moved from place to place in the United States.

“I would take my suitcase in hand, along with my three children, and follow him anywhere he would go. One of the best moves in our lives,” said Mae, “was the move to Presbyterian Village of Fort Scott. This quickly became our home, and it feels comfortable and exactly right. I am very glad that our family helped Wib and I find the Village. We feel towards the Village as though they are our new family. The staff is great to us and we are both so thankful for this phase of our lives together and being around people we love!”

Salette Schlee returns to Fort Scott to offer professional massage services

Salette Schlee has always been fascinated by the mechanics of the human body. Now she’s working as a massage therapist at Fort Scott Presbyterian Village and a salon in Frontenac, and applying all she’s learned to help her patients relieve pain and live life to the fullest.

Salette started her college career at Fort Scott Community College where she played volleyball, received her Associates of Science and enjoyed being an ambassador for the school. She loved Fort Scott and being involved in the community, but she wanted to learn more about the human body and how to improve back functioning.

In 2012, she attended Logan College of Chiropractic in St. Louis where she studied towards her Bachelor of Science. Salette received her massage therapy degree from Missouri College where she volunteered at the Siteman Cancer Center. This allowed her to learn more about disease and how it relates to our body movements.

Salette became licensed by the MBLEX (Massage & Bodywork Licensing Examination) which is the newest form of testing for massage therapists. It serves the massage therapy and regulatory communities as the national entry level licensure examination. She also is an active member of the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA), which is the largest non-profit, professional association serving massage therapists,

massage students and massage schools. It is the most trusted and respected name in massage therapy. Salette specializes in deep tissue and trigger point release therapy. Other modalities she uses include Swedish, geriatric, myofascial release, reflexology, prenatal, injury rehabilitation, hot stone massage and more.

She founded Knock Out Massage Therapy in 2015, and practices at the Platinum Salon, 521 S. Cayuga, Frontenac. Salette loved Fort Scott and always hoped she might return to this community one day.

When the massage therapy location at Fort Scott Presbyterian Village opened up, she was able to make her dream a reality. The Presbyterian Village location seemed to be the perfect fit, as it is open to the public 24 hours/day, it has great access, it is clean and very comfortable to offer a nice space for people to relax to make the massage more beneficial while in their session. Additionally, it provides Salette with the ability to increase her days and hours as needed to serve her clients in this area. Currently, Salette takes clients by appointment at the Frontenac location on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays and at the Fort Scott location on Wednesdays. Saturdays are by appointment only as clients need at either location. She is open to the public. New clients can take advantage of the

introductory full body massage rate and they can also save with the “refer a friend” system, receiving $10 off any service for each friend that names the “friend” on their intake form.

Packages for 30-minute, 60-minute, 90-minute and 2-hour massage therapy sessions are available, as well as gift certificates.

Salette is excited to be back in the Fort Scott community and is looking forward to providing professional massage therapy treatment to the community.
