With the approach of beautiful spring weather we will kick off our “Travel & Taste” opportunities for everyone to enjoy. Not only will we enjoy the great Kansas and Missouri scenery as we travel, we expect to find many nooks and hideaways that are favorites, plus local cuisines that this area of the U.S. has to offer. Our first discovery is in a remote area known only to locals called Grandma’s Place, in the very small town of Osiris, Missouri. (Probably not even on a map anymore; there is no population found in the census). Osiris is north of Jericho Springs on Highway 97.You’d never guess this is an eating place, as it used to be a farm house and still looks the same.

Everything is homemade from scratch Some of the best homecooking can be and wonderful! Here you will find found inside this house - Grandma’s in Osiris, Missouri. foods I used to see only at church socials. You could drive 1,000 miles and never get a better meal. The corn bread and beans are awesome. I loved the blueberry cobbler. The homemade mashed potatoes and noodles are sure to pack on the pounds. The ham will melt in your mouth. It’s open only a couple of times a week, and the owner and her family do everything from cooking to cleanup. The thing that makes it so great is the country atmosphere and friendly people, most whom are farm hands or retired. Even though it’s filled with regulars, there are no strangers in the room. Everyone speaks to you, and they visit back and forth from table to table. Places like this are few and far between, and you definitely feel like you are at your own grandma’s house. The name is fitting! Travel & Taste continued on page 2

Travel & Taste

continued from page 1

Second on our travels will be the small town of Scammon, Kansas, population approximately 467 (if you count pets too), to discover a place that is famous to locals called Josie’s Ristorante.

Josie’s is full of history, and everyone is welcomed as family. While raising their family, Mike and Sally Saporito had the dream to start a restaurant. This idea would come to life in 1986 as Josie’s Ristorante. Mike and Sally wanted to provide home-cooked Italian meals to the people of the Four State area and beyond. The recipes are passed down from family who hail from Italy. All food is prepared fresh daily, from their dinner pastas such as lasagna and ravioli to their very own blue cheese and Italian salad dressings. Their culinary team is composed of family members making the food they grew up with.

Join our Travel & Taste group, and come along as we discover unique hideaways together over friendship and great food!

Josie’s in Scammon, Kan., is full of history and great Italian food.

Presbyterian Village puts the fun in fundraiser while helping area seniors Many of you may know that the Good Samaritan Dinner and Auction is a great community evening filled with fun, excitement and delicious food. But you may not realize it’s more than just a fun time. It benefits the Good Samaritan program, which helps Presbyterian Village local residents who have outlived their financial resources through no fault of their own.

A dinner from Chicken Annie’s will be served from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $8.50 per meal in advance; $10 per meal at the door. Carryout is available, and all dinners come complete with homemade dessert and drink. Get your dinner tickets early, though; we often run out the evening of the event! In addition to bringing your appetite, bring your “auction arm” ready to bid on some great treasures! A live auction will begin at 5 p.m. in the garage, so if weather gives us challenges, we will all stay dry. We have something for everyone, even a “buy it now” area for those who like to get a deal quick. Check out the auction listing and pictures at nanceauctionservice.com as the event draws near. Tractors, outdoor equipment, lawn tools, hobby items, vintage and antique furniture and household items, gift certificates, new and treasures all available.

You can also purchase a chance to win one of two vacation packages to Santa Fe, N.M., a week’s stay in a quaint Southwest-style twostory condo. It’s located close to downtown for ease of walking to enjoy the local shopping, art studios, music, food, festival and fun. The condo is big enough to use for a family vacation, or keep it simple and get away for a romantic vacation. Winners will be drawn the evening of the event. Volunteers make the Good Samaritan Dinner and Auction possible, along with donations of gift certificates, furniture and other items from local businesses and community members. Businesses or individuals with items to donate for the auction should contact Executive Director Ginger Nance at 620-223-5550.

The Good Samaritan program depends solely on donations from friends and supporters.

“This event is truly a blessing to those in need, and so is everyone who participates,” Ginger said. “We are so grateful for those who support this event each year. We set a fundraising record last year, and I hope we top it this year.” Come out and lets have a great time together!
