Presbyterian Village puts the fun in fundraiser while helping area seniors
Chances are, you have heard of Fort Scott Presbyterian Village’s Annual Dinner and Auction. Every May, the not-for-profit retirement community offers a delicious dinner from Chicken Annie’s and a live and silent auction. You have probably heard that it is a casual, upbeat evening of fun and excitement! What you may not know is why this event is held.
“All of the proceeds directly benefit our residents at Fort Scott Presbyterian Village who have a financial need,” said Executive Director Ginger Nance. “As a Christian based, mission-driven community, Presbyterian Village provides care for those who call us home, even if they should outlive their personal financial resources.”
The annual dinner and auction is the largest fundraiser for Presbyterian Village’s Good Samaritan Program, which helps these residents. The

Good Samaritan Program depends solely on donations from friends and supporters of Presbyterian Village and surrounding community.
“An important result of our mission is caring for residents even when economic times are tough,” Ginger said. “As our residents age, their needs change and their resources may dwindle. As a result, some come to rely on government programs which do not keep pace with escalating

costs. Presbyterian Village’s Good Samaritan Fund fills in that gap. It is through support from local citizens to the Good Samaritan Fund that we are able to ensure our residents’ peace of mind that they will receive continued, assisted living, quality care year after year in our setting.”
You can help raise money for the Good Samaritan mission Fund while at the same time enjoying good food and a fun auction at this year’s Village fundraiser on Wednesday, May 11, at 2401 S. Horton. In addition to the Chicken Annie’s dinner, a drawing for a 50/50 cash prize will be held. The more tickets for the cash prize we sell, obviously the bigger the winnings. This could be huge for the lucky winner!
Advance dinner tickets are just $8.50, and that includes a homemade dessert and beverage. Tickets may be available at the door for $10.00. But hurry now to get your tickets, as we usually sell out the day of the event. Dinner is served from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. and drive through carry out is available if you cannot stay for the fun. Tickets for an opportunity to win the 50/50 drawing are available for a suggested donation of $5 each or three tickets for $10. The auction will again feature a wide range of items large and small, new and used, bargains and heirlooms. At least one vehicle is expected to be sold, as well as many indoor and

outdoor items. There will be something there to fit everyone’s budget. Nance Auction Service will return to entertain the crowd with their fun auctioneering prowess. A silent auction will also be held on selected items and a buy it now area will be available, as well. The auction begins at 5 p.m. Items will be available for viewing during the day on May 11. See www.nanceauctionservice.com for a listing of live auction items. Call Presbyterian Village at 620-2235500 or email gnance@pmma.org for more information about the Good Samaritan Program and to purchase meal or drawing tickets.
Clap your hands for the new van!
The new van was finally delivered after months of raising money to replace the van that had been in service since Presbyterian Village was first built 21 years ago. Although the old van was still working hard to do its job, the new van was a welcome sight to all the tenants who live at Presbyterian Village. The minivan is used to transport residents to cultural and educational events, shopping excursions, doctor appointments and other outings. Currently the van makes more than 3,600 trips per year to various Fort Scott locations, as well as the surrounding areas. Thank you to all the wonderful supporters of this project! 4 COMMUNITY MATTERS APRIL 2016
New assisted living director a familiar face When its long-time assisted living director Lori Collier decided to retire and take a less than full-time role at the end of May, Fort Scott Presbyterian Village did not have to look far to find her replacement. Jennifer Hyer worked at Presbyterian Village for 6 years in both full-time and part-time roles as she continued to grow her expertise.
“Jennifer is an outstanding nurse,” said Ginger Nance, executive director. “We are so blessed that She is ready to step back into a full-time role as Lori retires. Many of our residents and their families already know Jennifer and are looking forward to working with her.” During the transition, Lori will continue to work, enabling Jennifer to step into the role while leaning on Lori’s expertise and years of experience, Ginger said. “Although I know Lori is looking forward to more days to garden and spend with grandchildren, we will miss her.” She won’t be far away though. Collier plans to continue in a
more part time and advisory role so she won’t lose touch with what she has loved doing at Presbyterian Village for more than 10 years.
“What an honor to be taking on the new position, director of assisted living,” said Jennifer. “Lori has had such an impact on my nursing career. It will be a privilege to train by her side in the weeks to come. “This has been a journey filled with love for my profession where compassion, teamwork and our Christian-based mission collide,” she said. “I have found that the Presbyterian Village is a place where the little things we do for one another become our biggest rewards! This is a community where we take pride in providing the best care for seniors and it’s my duty and promise to continue doing so by carrying out our faith based mission and caring for each of your loved ones as though they are my own.” Fort Scott Presbyterian Village has a history of zero-deficiency surveys from the Kansas Department of Aging

and Disability Services. Last June, the campus received its seventh consecutive zero-deficiency survey and it’s ninth in the past 13 years. Jennifer has worked at Presbyterian Village for 6 of those years.
“Jennifer’s experience and dedication to our mission will enable us to continue to provide the quality senior services those in the Fort Scott area expect from us,” Ginger said.
Upcoming Events:
