Super heroes among us Our staff of super heroes!
By Ginger Nance, Executive Director
The Fort Scott Presbyterian Village earned a zero-deficiency survey from the Kansas Department on Aging and Disability Services following our annual inspection on June 9. This is our seventh consecutive survey to earn such a rare accomplishment, and we feel like super heroes, here to protect and serve! It’s all due to our dedicated staff. Every employee impacts the outcome of the survey since regulations affect every job position at Presbyterian Village.
These regulations are designed to ensure a standard of care is met for all assisted living and other health care communities in Kansas. By meeting this standard, senior living communities are able to renew their licenses and continue to provide care. For Presbyterian Village, it’s not about just meeting a minimum standard. It’s about setting higher standards than most by creating a Christian culture and living that culture on a daily basis. We are so proud of our staff.
They are super heroes and they inspire me every day. They go above and beyond in their caring approach, and it’s their second nature to do so. We celebrated our success together with a fun, playful day among residents and friends. The Presbyterian Manors leadership team located in Wichita share in the pride of our staff. They happily awarded each employee with a Super Hero shirt to wear with honor.
Family caregivers a growing trend Are you a caregiver for someone in your family? Do you help an older adult with groceries, rides, meds, chores, laundry, meals, appointments or supervision? Do you live with that person because you don’t want to leave him/her alone? Does the person call you frequently to ask for help? Do you worry about the person’s need for help, health condition or forgetfulness? If yes, you are among the one-fourth of the U.S. population identifying themselves as family caregivers. In addition to feeling responsible and taking care of the other person, you must take care of yourself. Research shows that caregivers are at increased risk for health problems and many ®

times ignore their own needs because they focus on the care receiver, whose needs always feel more urgent. Depression and chronic conditions develop more than twice the rate of noncaregivers. To make it even more disheartening, research shows that over 60 percent die before the family member they were caring for. At Fort Scott Presbyterian Village, we can help! We are able to offer several programs designed to help in situations like yours. Adult Day or night services at the Presbyterian Village is designed to give you the break that you need, while trained and caring staff step in to provide the care that your loved one needs. A quiet nice place to relax is provided to your loved one, as well as life enrichment programs and opportunities to socialize and make new friends is provided while in our care. A few hours a day, or all day, what better way to provide a break to you than to make it fun and refreshing for your loved one at the same time? In home services is another option that the Presbyterian Village can offer you on a scheduled basis. Specially trained and loving staff can come to
your loved one’s home within city limits to do some of the tasks that you may be doing in order to give you a break and some welcomed relief. Having someone to cook, clean, help with personal care, or simply be there can be reassurance to you while you spend some quality time away for yourself to recharge. Need a vacation or need to be gone for several days? Our respite program at the Presbyterian Village is designed for short stays, whether it’s due to family being away or for a short stay for your loved one after a hospitalization to strengthen before going home. New health opportunities for residents On July 1, Presbyterian Village entered an agreement with Mercy Health for Life to add wellness benefits to all Presbyterian Village residents on a regular basis.
Meet Rich Wallace, a physical therapist with Mercy Health for Life. He has more than 20 years of personal training experience. Clients thrive on his dynamic and enthusiastic personality.
Rich and many other specialists at the center also have extensive experience in working with people with arthritis and other aging issues. Adding this amenity provides our seniors with the opportunity to go to the center Mondays through Fridays to participate in
personalized wellness programs. Residents can receive a physical assessment, set goals and receive health and nutrition advice if needed.
Presbyterian Village has recommended residents participate in activities at Mercy Health for Life in the past to address a loss of strength and an increase in falls with good results. Once residents started participating, they soon experienced a dramatic improvement to their overall physical and mental health.
“Making the decision to have Health for Life assessable free of charge to all residents 5 days a week was an easy decision to make,” said Ginger
Rich Wallace, physical therapist, will be working with Presbyterian Village residents on a regular basis.
Nance, executive director. “If seniors will go on a routine basis and improve their overall health before problems occur, we can foresee a much improved lifestyle for them to enjoy year around.”
