Fort Scott Presbyterian Village

Special thanks November artist of the month: Sally “Micki” Kraft Every month, we’re honored to display the work of a local artist in our lobby.Through the end of November, you’re invited to come and enjoy the talents of Sally “Micki” Kraft, whose talented sewing projects are truly works of art.

We are so grateful to Lois “Alyene” Fowler for becoming an Alice Kalb Society member with her legacy bequest gift. She lived at Fort Scott Presbyterian Village from August 2003 until her passing in 2018. She celebrated her 100th birthday with us! Her devoted nephew, Dean Mann, said that when it came time to make the decision of where she would live, he knew from 25 years of being a part of the Fort Scott community, she would receive the best care at Presbyterian Village. In visiting Alyene often, he came to know the staff at Presbyterian Village very well and was so impressed with the way she was cared for. Gifts like Alyene’s make it possible to provide this quality of care. To learn more about leaving a tribute or legacy gift, contact Patti Christen at PChristen@pmma.org.

Learn more about Micki:

“I was born in San Diego where I met my husband. We have 9 children, and there are three sets of twins. We lost one of our sons at birth, and that was a very sad part of my life.

“It was when my children were young that I started sewing. At that point in my life, I sewed out of pure necessity. I have worked various jobs. My husband and I have lived in many different places, including California and Texas. “We sold our home in New Point Beach in 1990 and moved to Fort Scott. Some of my family has also moved to Kansas. Some live here in Fort Scott, and some of them have moved to Nevada, Missouri.

“It was at this point in my life I started sewing for fun. I have always liked doing crafts but found no time because of my children. Once we moved to Fort Scott, I found myself bored, so I started to sew once again. I have set up a booth at the Farmers Market, and at the middle school extravaganza, where I sell stocking stuffers. “I am truly excited to be able to share my work with Presbyterian Village as Artist of the Month. I am happy to be 77 years and still enjoying sewing and crafts.”

Tips for a terrific Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and while it is a traditional harvest celebration, it’s also a wonderful time of the year to spend with family and friends. The holidays are also a time to be with elderly loved ones, and there are a few things that might help them be more comfortable: • When you are traveling to your family’s home for a Thanksgiving meal with your elderly loved one, remember to pack an extra blanket or two. They can be used to keep car rides warm and also can be

used for comfortable positioning if you are going on a long car ride.

• Remember to pack your loved one’s medication. It sounds simple but actually is a step that often gets forgotten. • Thanksgiving is a time of sharing your favorite dish with your family and friends. Just remember that most elderly have trouble with chewing certain foods, so remember to make a few dishes that are easy to chew or that can be cut into small pieces. Some elderly have dental issues as well so be sure they are able to enjoy the holiday meal. Did you know that the Fort Scott Presbyterian Village has home care services such as hands-on care, medication set-up, nurse monitoring, in-town transportation, errand

services such as Christmas shopping, grocery shopping, and even meals that can be delivered right to your front door? Use inhome care to take some of the stress out of the holidays.

If you are a caregiver and are planning on going out of town for Thanksgiving, let our professional team give an extra hand. Also, if you are a caregiver and just need a day for holiday shopping, we provide adult day care, which could include meals, transportation, showering, elopement safety, salon services, massage and an evening bistro.

Get to know:

Jennifer Wiggans

While November is officially National Caregiver’s Month, at Fort Scott Presbyterian Village we appreciate caregivers every month! We’d like to highlight new employee Jennifer Wiggans, certified medication aide, and share why she feels she’s meant to be a caregiver in our independent and assisted living community.

“Taking care of the elderly has always been a passion of mine. I have been in this field for almost 20 years. I cannot imagine doing something that doesn’t involve providing care to the elderly. I started working at Presbyterian

Village just over three months ago. I got online one day and filled out an application just to see what might happen. Ellen Fairchild, director of assisted living, called me the very next day and scheduled an interview! Soon after my interview, she called and offered me a job. From the minute I started, I knew this was where I was meant to be. I feel that God planned on me coming here. When I am here, it isn’t just a job. It is a passion, and I get to share my day with a group of amazing people. From the tenants to my co-workers, everyone here is family. What started as a whim has turned into a blessing!”

Jennifer Wiggan feels like Presbyterian Village is where she is meant to be.

Veterans Day, November 11 We would like to say thank you to all who served in the military and thank you to families who have lost their loved ones. Join us on Friday, November 9 at 2 p.m. where we will serve cookies and punch to honor our veterans.

Did you know?

Some of you may recognize the red poppy as the symbol of Veteran’s Day, but do you know the history? We learn more from veteranaid.org: “In conjunction with the spirit of Remembrance Day worldwide, many wear a simple red poppy on the lapel, reminiscent of the red poppies (the annual herbaceous species of flowering plant ‘Papaver rhoeas’) that were among the first plants to bloom in the devastated battlefields of northern France and Belgium. The connection with the poppy and the fallen soldier was solidified with one of the era’s most famous poems, ‘In Flanders Field,’ written by Canadian physician Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae. McCrae was

reportedly inspired to write the poem after presiding over the funeral of his friend and fellow soldier 22-year-old Lieutenant Alexis Helmer, who died in the Second Battle ofYpres. The poem gives voice to those soldiers buried in the battlefield, pleading with survivors to take up the torch of their fight, and to remember them even though red poppies now cover the battlefield.” FORT SCOTT PRESBYTERIAN VILLAGE
