COMING UP IN COMMUNITY MATTERS:
Everyone has a story to tell
We will focus on memory care and national memory screening day in an upcoming issue of Community Matters. What do you do to stay sharp? What tricks or tips do you have for remembering things? How has being in memory care helped a loved one? Because this also will be our November issue, we also will be sharing stories about our many veterans. If you served in the military, we want to hear your story. If you’ve got a story to share, contact Ginger Nance and your story could be featured in an upcoming edition of Community Matters.

How is your hearing health?
If you’re having trouble hearing conversations, you’re not alone. About one-third of people in the United States between the ages of 65 and 75 have some degree of hearing loss. For those older than 75, the number of people with some hearing loss is almost 1 in 2.
Fort Scott Presbyterian Village will host a free Hearing Health Seminar at 9:30 a.m. September 30 for seniors in the Fort Scott area. Meagan Morris, ARNP with Baker Clinic, will discuss some of the reasons for hearing loss in seniors and possible solutions available.

At the end of the presentation, she will offer a cerumen removal procedure using a special technique that causes no damage to the ear drum. People who have this procedure often experience noticeably improved hearing. Those wishing to receive the procedure will need to supply a copy of their insurance information for billing purposes. You can’t reverse hearing loss. However, you don’t have to live in a world of muted, less distinct sounds. “Finding Solutions to Senior
Hearing Loss” is part of Fort Scott Presbyterian Village’s Just Ask series, a free, ongoing, life-long learning program featuring information from local and regional experts on topics of interest to older adults and their families. A free lunch will be served to attendees at 11:45 a.m. Call in advance to reserve your seat for this program as seating is limited. Call the Presbyterian Village business office at 620-2235550 or email gnance@pmma.org.
Last of the summer lake activities
We will travel to Farlington Lake Sept. 1 to see if the leaves are starting to show any changes in color. We expect the last of the vacationers will be about at the lake as they boat, fish and enjoy their evenings sitting by the fire. Tenants who travel will plan to stop at the marina to stretch, grab a snack and enjoy the last of the summer lake experience.
Keep Connected: National Assisted Living Week Sept. 11-17
The week of Sept. 11-17, we will celebrate National Assisted Living week with a theme of “Keeping Connected.” Each day of this special week we will offer unique ways to stay connected:
Monday, Sept. 12: We will begin the week by connecting to technology to get active using a “Fit Bit” or similar measuring device to monitor our movements. Often, if we just realize how much, or how little, we actually move about in our day, it helps us to set measurable goals to get moving more.
In the afternoon at 3:20 p.m., we will get connected to the surrounding community, especially with the younger generation, by having some of our tenants give an oral history of their lives to students from the Christian Learning Center.
It’s amazing to find out how much real life history there is to learn about inside these walls! Living stories of the great depression, being a prisoner of war, riding a horse bareback to school each day, coming to America from another country, and many other interesting life stories surround us at the Presbyterian Village. Our residents and staff have so much living history to offer, take a minute and join us. Tuesday, Sept. 13: We will use technology to help put a twist in LIKE US ON FACEBOOK
our activities by fulfilling a bucket list item without ever having to leave the community. We will offer a virtual reality experience so tenants can explore regions of the world and see it like they are right in the midst of the action.
Wednesday, Sept. 14: We will connect with loved ones by setting up live video chats with tenants’ family and friends where they can see each other’s faces while visiting using “Face Time” with the smart phone device. If you would like to actively participate in this by chatting with a tenant at Presbyterian Village, please contact Anicia or Ginger in advance so we have your contact information by calling 620-223-5550. Thursday, Sept. 15: At 2 p.m., we will get connected to highlight how technology can enhance the quality of care we provide to our
tenants who live at Presbyterian Village. A pharmacist will be here to speak about how they use innovative technology to review the medications that their patients take and determine if something may be causing more harm than good. In addition, the pharmacist can use a technology tool to show tenants how to decide which Medicare Part D medication insurance plan would be most beneficial for them to have based on their current medication usage. This is a must see and open to the public!
Friday, Sept. 16: We will connect to the surrounding community once again by holding a voter registration drive, understanding that in November we will participate in the 2016 elections. An elected official will be here to allow tenants to ask questions about issues that are important to them.
September Sentiment
The changing of seasons can help us not only anticipate the future, but reminisce on the past. Resident Estella Meech captures this sentiment with her poem about September. The waning days of summer Are what September will bring. It seems like only yesterday We were joyful it was spring. We are moving into autumn With its hues of orange and yellow, And the hot days of summer Somehow- start to mellow. Autumn prepares us for winter With the hardships it may bring. But it gives us time to meditate And wish again for spring. FORT SCOTT PRESBYTERIAN MANOR
