$1,500 Grant for Senior Wellness Program
Fort Scott Presbyterian Village is pleased to announce that we’ve received a $1,500 grant from The Community Foundation of Southeast Kansas to fund resident access to Health for Life. Health for Life is a workout center with a specialized trainer located at Mercy Hospital. We will feature memory care or gratitude in an upcoming issue of Community Matters. If you have a story about memory care or how gratitude has shaped you, or if you just want to tell the world what you love about living in your senior living community, we want to share the story. Contact Deborah Crawford and your story could be featured in an upcoming edition of Community Matters.

“Our thought is that if we can get seniors to go out and work with someone and begin to get fit prior to an episode that may occur in their life such as the flu, or other illness, they will bounce back quicker and have a greater resistance to a physical decline,” said Ginger Nance, executive director. “We hope to increase their overall mental and physical health. We will provide free transportation to and from the center to allow all equal access regardless of their ability to drive.”
We are grateful for this grant from the The Community Foundation of Southeast Kansas and look forward to helping even more seniors live their best life possible.
The Community Foundation of Southeast Kansas hosts individual charitable funds, created by donors who have a passion for giving back to the community. Grants from the funds assist people throughout Southeast Kansas and many charities beyond Kansas. Proud to call it my home By Executive Director Ginger Nance
A large part of everything that occurs at Presbyterian Village is decided upon by a committee of tenants who voice their desires about topics that come up. It’s always an honor to get to serve with this group because there is never a chance of getting idle in our ways. For many of us, our days are planned around meal times, regardless of our age. We know what we like and don’t like to eat, and we are a society that is

comfortable in ordering from a menu much of the time.
At Presbyterian Village we have a Menu Committee who meet with a nutritionist every six weeks to determine tenants’ overall likes and dislikes of the food that is served. This group reviews the menus and offers suggestions, recipes and feedback so that we are serving meals that will be enjoyed by those who live here. We have a group of tenants who meet with the Life Enrichment Coordinator monthly to talk about different outings, speakers, entertainers and other events they would like to see on the social calendar. This group loves to keep us active and stimulates our mind to continue to grow, meet people and live each day to the fullest. Additionally, we have a Tenant Council
that meets with the executive director monthly to discuss new programming they would like to see in place. This is a very visionary group that helps to keep Presbyterian Village leaders focused on what’s important to seniors today and keeps us moving in the direction of our purpose to help our tenants live “The way you want to live so it’s more than a tagline – it’s a way of life.
Together these groups play a crucial role in developing the Presbyterian Village and helping it be a community that works toward improvements and overall tenant focus. Each group is unique, yet they all hold one common characteristic: the focus on others. Every tenant who serves on a committee comes with a mindset of serving others and helping to make Presbyterian Village a place they are proud to call “my home.
What exactly is soul food? Join us to find out! We found a quaint little place in Joplin, Mo., that is bursting with soul food like fried chicken, collard greens, catfish and ribs. We invite you to join us as we travel together on Sept. 13 to check out called MEs Place Soul Food CafĂŠ. According to the Joplin Globe, “The ‘ME’ in the restaurant’s name is a combination of the middle initials of owners Tabitha Smith and Melodee ColbertKean. When Melodee is not serving up plates full of home-cooked heaven, she serves as mayor of Joplin,â€? so she is no stranger to meeting new people.
After relaxing over a great, soulful meal together among friends, we will enjoy the sights of the countryside between Joplin and Fort Scott and plan to make a few stops along the way home.
RSVP to 620-223-5550 by Sept. 11 to join us.
Ever wondered about the practices of different religions around the world?
The world is made up of many different kinds of people, each with their own traditions, customs and beliefs. Of those different faiths, Christianity is the religion of the majority who live in our area. But as travel becomes easier and more people enter the U.S. to live, work and play, we are learning more about their different cultures and beliefs. Join us to hear Dr. Harold Hicks of Fort Scott Community College at 3 p.m. on Sept. 18 at Presbyterian Village as he presents information regarding what the belief system is of some in the world around us. He will talk about rites of passage that some practice, sacred foods, places of worship and the differences – and similarities – that exist.
Presbyterian Village Seeks Massage Therapist Presbyterian Village is seeking to add a massage professional to our team. Massage has a wide variety of benefits for aging adults. Many therapists are learning techniques specifically for seniors, such as a gentler touch and careful positioning. Some practitioners will focus on hands and feet, if their clients experience numbness or do not walk. Massage also has been shown to improve circulation, decrease inflammation, alleviate symptoms of arthritis and more. If you know someone who may have interest in extending their massage services to seniors and to the community of the area, please contact Ginger Nance, Executive Director at the Fort Scott Presbyterian Village, at 620-223-5550.
