COMING UP IN COMMUNITY MATTERS:
Everyone has a story to tell
Everyone knows fitness is important. How have you taken steps to be fit? What’s your regular fitness routine? If you’ve started a fitness routine late in life, what advice would you have for others? How do you think you benefit from regular exercise?
If you’ve got a story to share about getting or staying fit, contact Ginger Nance and your story could be featured in an upcoming edition of Community Matters.

March 2016
Fort Scott Presbyterian Village’s Art is Ageless® exhibit and reception features senior artists Since the beginning of time, creative expression has brought joy to both its creators and those who experience their art. The Art is Ageless® program offers senior artists the opportunity to share and display their artwork and reaffirms the agelessness of human creativity.
Some have resumed art after putting it aside for a career, others have been creating beautiful pieces throughout their lives, and others never picked up a brush until after they retired, but all are now expressing themselves through art. This month, their works are on display at Fort Scott Presbyterian Village. “It’s inspiring to see the beautiful pieces these seniors have created,” said Melisa Fernandez, life enrichment director. “The joy it brings to them and others is wonderful, and that’s something we want to celebrate and share with the entire Fort Scott community.”
The Art is Ageless exhibit will feature works from local artists who are 65 and older, including a few Presbyterian Village residents. The public is welcome to visit the community to view the exhibit of acrylics, oils, photography and various other mediums, ranging from amateur to professional levels. The exhibit is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., April 13 through 20. In addition to the exhibit, Presbyterian Village will honor local senior artists during a reception at the community at 3 p.m.,Wednesday, April 20.
The Art is Ageless program has been encouraging creativity in seniors for more than 35 years, and is sponsored by Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America (PMMA), which is a nonprofit organization that owns and operates 18 senior living communities in Missouri and Kansas. Each year the organization publishes an Art is Ageless calendar, featuring works by amateur senior artists. Proceeds from the sale of calendars are reinvested into new art programs and opportunities for PMMA residents.

Upcoming events Speakers Series: Currency jewelry making
Join us on March 24 at 2 p.m. to hear Dee Ann Davis, of Fort Scott, Kan., as she tells about her hobby of transforming coins into jewelry. Using a Dremel tool, Davis drills holes into the coins. She then uses a jeweler’s saw to cut designs, usually following a pattern or features of the coin. They are then sanded down thinly and polished using a Dremel. Dee Ann seeks the advice of and learns from other jewelers when creating many of her new pieces. The coins may be finished off as a necklace, bracelet, or many other jewelry pieces.
Join us for Walk in Faith Art Show
Melisa Fernandez, Life Enrichment Coordinator
What is faith? How could we describe what faith was like to someone who has no concept of faith? What does faith feel like? What does walking in faith look like? And how can we better understand our friends and neighbors who’ve taken a different path?
We all have a common goal and that’s to make this life the most meaningful we can both for ourselves and each other. This month, our tenants here at Fort Scott Presbyterian Village are going to be working on different art forms that depict just that: our walk in faith or other way we’ve chosen to travel through life. Whether your walk is smooth like a creek or rocky like the rapids we want to see it portrayed through various works of art.
I would love to have our walls covered in what it feels like to walk in your faith. To do that I need you, people who are willing to look inside themselves and ask questions sometimes we are afraid to ask. We welcome anyone in the community to display their pieces here at the Village. Art can be dropped off March 14-18, and will be on display March 21-24, with a pick up day on March 25. For more information, call Melisa Fernandez at 620-223-5550 or email mfernandez@pmma.org. FORT SCOTT PRESBYTERIAN MANOR
