Driven to serve: Dawn Smith Executive director brings energy and passion to Fulton Presbyterian Manor
When you meet Executive Director Dawn Smith, you quickly understand why she excels in her position. Her energy and enthusiasm for others, along with her attention to detail and diligent work ethic have a big impact on this small-town senior living community.
“My favorite thing about my job is being with residents and employees, and I love being in a small community. I have the time to interact with staff and residents, and my heart is to be amongst them Dawn Smith has served as executive director and talk to them to get to know how their life is going. Things can be at Fulton Presbyterian Manor for five years. fast-paced around here, but it’s important to slow down and ask, “How was your child’s soccer game, etc.?”
Dawn may like to slow down and connect with her employees, but she’s always on the go. She is driven to make Fulton Presbyterian Manor the best it can be.
“I’ve been here for five years now, and I was executive director at a community in Kansas before here, so I’ve been an executive director for 10 years. I was a CNA for 10 years before that, and I had my sights set on where I’m at now. I knew my very first shift I wanted to do this. I was trained by a woman named Sue, the best CNA, who instilled such a strong work ethic in me,” said Dawn. “I’ve been in this field for 20 years now and was a volunteer prior to that. We’ve made great strides and changes as an industry. When we say senior living now, we really mean it. It’s living. You’re coming here to live, not to die.”

Chatter Box!
If laughter is the best medicine, then one PATH patient certainly is taking, and giving, his daily dose. While he agreed to share his tidbits in the newsletter, he doesn’t want the credit, so he’ll just go by his nickname,“Chatter Box.” During his stay, he would leave funny notes, poems and stories on the therapy department’s door. Here are a few favorites:

Dawn’s passion for improvement is matched and supported by Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America, which provides communities with the tools and resources they need to succeed.
“I love that with PMMA, protocols are followed exactly, both systemwide and here. It’s how we provide the high quality of care we do. Employees are
satisfied because they understand their jobs,” said Dawn. “I also love that we can provide the full spectrum of care here. They can utilize whatever level of care they need, whether it’s PATH, independent, assisted or long term. You don’t have to learn a new building and people.” Dawn acknowledges that there are challenges to her position, but they’re common to anyone working in the senior living field. “Caretakers need to take care of
themselves, too. That’s why I have started doing Crossfit to stay strong. I love it. I also believe in the power of positive thinking. The mission is our focus every day. We talk to new hires about it. When employees clock in, they say the mission in their heads. I display daily motivational quotes, and my team has even started recommending the ones they love. If you clear your mind of all the other things and focus on what today is all about, the rest will come.”
