TELL US ABOUT

the women you know

We will feature Women’s History in an upcoming issue of Community Matters. We want to know about the achievements of the women who live on our campuses. If you were among the first women in the workforce or elected office, or if you just want to tell the world what you love about living in your senior living community, we want to share the story. Contact Keri Edwards and your story could be featured in an upcoming edition of Community Matters.

PATH program brings progress and peace of mind

Earl and Pat O’Rourke are wellknown figures in the Fulton community, and they have touched many lives through their work and community involvement. So when Earl had a stroke in August, his family turned to Fulton Presbyterian Manor’s PATH® (Post Acute to Home) rehabilitation program. He was completely paralyzed on his left side. Earl spent a week at Boone Hospital, then another four weeks at Rusk Rehabilitation for acute therapy. Once he came to Fulton Presbyterian Manor, he felt at “home.” “We felt as though we were at home from the beginning here. The O’Rourkes feel at home in the PATH His PATH room is very rehabilitation program. comfortable and inviting. It’s spacious enough for visitors and welcoming also,” said Pat, Earl’s wife of 65 years. “The nursing team is very good. They make me feel welcomed as his wife to come and stay all day. And I enjoy visiting with the other residents. Everyone is very compassionate and understanding.” Earl and Pat have been through many ups and downs in their long, happy marriage, and a major health incident such as this is enough to shake anyone’s foundation. “One single moment in time can change your life forever. Being at Fulton Presbyterian Manor helped alleviate the anxiety I felt,” said Pat. “During care plans they conferenced in our daughter, so that she could be a part of the care plan. The family has been able to participate in care needs and goal setting

from the beginning. And the therapy offered is far and above our expectations.” Earl agrees. “I couldn’t always see the end, but the results are visible,” said Earl, who hopes to return to his home soon. “It’s the best two hours I spend during the day.” We’re glad we could help Earl and the O’Rourke family during their time of need, much like they’ve helped so many others in the Fulton community. “The CNAs have been wonderful, too,” said Pat. “They’re friendly, compassionate, and understanding. We’ve even become friends with some – we hug each other when we see each other.”

Fulton Presbyterian Manor honored for achievements

Dawn Smith, executive director, receives a certificate of recognition from Bruce Shogren, left, PMMA CEO, and Bill Taylor, right, PMMA COO.

Fulton Presbyterian Manor received a certificate of recognition from Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America for reaching goals in fiscal year 2017, covering the months of July 1, 2016, through June 30, 2017.

The recognition came through PMMA’s new Emerald Awards Program, designed to encourage its 17 locations and 2 hospices to achieve high levels of resident and employee satisfaction, meet financial goals, build philanthropic support for the organization’s mission and meet marketing goals. There are 11 areas measured for the Emerald Awards. To receive an emerald, a community has to meet its goals in all 11 areas. Certificates of recognition were given out to communities that reached their goals in one or more category. Fulton was recognized for achieving a five-star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

“This recognition is a visible sign of Fulton Presbyterian Manor’s commitment to the mission of PMMA of providing quality senior services guided by Christian values,” said Bruce Shogren, chief executive officer for PMMA. Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America has been providing quality senior services in Kansas and Missouri for more than 65 years.
