Plaques presented to Fulton Presbyterian Manor veterans Local resident Charles (Don) Ernst has a heart for veterans. After all, he is one.
“I was in during the Korean War. Now I volunteer for the Central Missouri Honor Flight. It’s coming up on flight number 35, and I went on flight 18. It’s really something to see,” said Don. It was through his service to the Honor
Flight program that Don met Jefferson City resident Paul VanLoo. While Paul wasn’t in the service, he’s partial to veterans, and has a unique way of honoring their sacrifices.
“I met Paul through my cousin, Vietnam War Veteran Bob Linnenbrink. Paul makes these fantastic wooden plaques for each branch of the military.

As it turns out, Paul enjoyed making the plaques, but was looking for others to distribute them how they saw fit.
“Paul is a tremendous man to do this. He just wants to do a little something for veterans. We can’t reach them all, but there’s probably several hundred who have these now. What I do is try to get pictures of each vet holding the plaque. I send those to Paul. He puts his name and address on the back of each plaque, and some write him thank you notes to tell them they like them,” said Don. One such group of veterans to receive the plaques were none other than our very own here at Fulton Presbyterian Manor. And the way that came to be was by pure coincidence.

“I volunteer at Kingdom of Callaway Historical Society, and one day I just decided to stop at Fulton Presbyterian Manor. It was on my way, and I was guessing there would be veterans there,” said Don. “I talked to (Activity Director) Beth Boyd, and sure enough, she thought it was a great idea. So, they got the veterans together in the dining hall, and wouldn’t you know I ended up knowing a few of them. I told them about Paul, and what he does, and a couple of them had tears in their eyes.”

Don and Paul have made a tremendous impact on local veterans, especially here at Presbyterian Manor, and their time and service are much appreciated.
“For me it’s an honor to do this, to see the reaction of the veterans, they are so nice. Sometimes I’m almost crying. The veterans who’ve served are so grateful to have just something small, and the presentation of the plaques was something nice in addition to their daily routine,” said Don. “I’d like to check back in every six months or so, and present plaques to any new veterans who arrive.”
