Kansas City Presbyterian Manor’s Art is Ageless® exhibit and reception features senior artists

April 2016

Since the beginning of time, creative expression has brought joy to both its creators and those who experience their art. The Art is Ageless® program offers senior artists the opportunity to share and display their artwork and reaffirms the agelessness of human creativity.

Some have resumed art after putting it aside for a career, others have been creating beautiful pieces throughout their lives, and others never picked up a brush until after they retired, but all are now expressing themselves through art. This month, their works are on display at Kansas City Presbyterian Manor.

“It’s inspiring to see the beautiful pieces these seniors have created,” said Sarah Drew, Art is Ageless coordinator. “The joy it brings to them and others is wonderful, and that’s something we want to celebrate and share with the entire Kansas City community.”

The Art is Ageless exhibit will feature works from local artists who are 65 and older, including a few Presbyterian Manor residents. The public is welcome to visit the community to view the exhibit of

acrylics, oils, photography and various other mediums, ranging from amateur to professional levels. The exhibit is open 2:30 to 4 p.m. May 9 - 13.

In addition to the exhibit, Presbyterian Manor will honor local senior artists during a reception at the community at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, May 13.

The Art is Ageless program has been encouraging creativity in seniors for more than 35 years, and is sponsored by Presbyterian Manors of Mid-

America (PMMA), which is a nonprofit organization that owns and operates 18 senior living communities in Missouri and Kansas. Each year the organization publishes an Art is Ageless calendar, featuring works by amateur senior artists. Proceeds from the sale of calendars are reinvested into new art programs and opportunities for PMMA residents.

PMMA’s Founders Day celebrates 67 years of service to seniors

Employees of Kansas City Presbyterian Manor will observe the founding of Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America this month as the company celebrates 67 years of providing quality senior services guided by Christian values in Kansas and Missouri.

Each Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America campus will have their own celebration with residents and employees during April acknowledging the importance each play in making life at Kansas City the way you want to live.

“Many of our employees view what they do as a calling, not just a job,” said Bruce Shogren, president and CEO. “Our dedicated employees make it possible for us to sustain PMMA’s mission, which directly impacts the wonderful care our 2,400 residents receive every day.” Kansas City Presbyterian Manor will observe Founders Day with a Reception and Social on Tuesday, April 19 at 3 p.m. in the Chapel.

Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America’s roots go back to 1947. Alice Kalb, a widow from central Kansas, appealed to a Presbyterian Church organization to establish a home for seniors. Her vision became the first Presbyterian Manor community in Newton, Kan., and inspired others to do even more. Today PMMA remains true to the spirit of Alice’s vision, providing quality senior services guided by Christian values.

COMING UP IN COMMUNITY MATTERS:

Everyone has a story to tell

Staying in touch with your children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren often means getting used to using some new technologies. How do you use technology to keep up with your family? How has technology made life easier? How has technology kept you close to family and friends who live far away?

If you’ve got a story to share about how you’re using technology, contact Tina Ashford, activity director, and your story could be featured in an upcoming edition of Community Matters.

Volunteer Recognition Tea

We have more than 70 volunteers who share their time and talents with us throughout the year. Some of them assist by delivering mail, leading needle craft group, serving ice cream and popcorn in the Friendship Shop; leading a church service, Sunday School, devotion or servicing communion; playing card games; assisting residents with bingo, assisting residents to the beauty shop; visiting one to one with residents; leading evening bingo games; leading painting and craft sessions; sharing their pets with us and travel stories and much, much more.

We can never thank them enough for spending their valuable time with our residents, staff and families! Join us at 2 p.m. April 15 for our Volnteer Recognition Tea. Even one person can make a difference. It reminds us of the story of a man on the beach where thousands of starfish lay dying in the sun and he saw a girl tossing them into the sea, one by one. “Why bother?" he asked. “You won’t make much of a difference.” Tossing yet another starfish into the sea, the girl said, “I made a difference to that one.”
