PMMA rebalances portfolio with sale of Kansas City campus In the more than six and a half decades Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America has provided care for and advocated for the aging in Kansas and Missouri, the senior retirement landscape has changed dramatically. PMMA remains committed to our mission of providing quality senior services guided by Christian values and to meeting the ever changing needs of today’s seniors. Seniors want a full continuum of care, with an emphasis on active living and wellness. Out of this demand, the Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) model was born. This model provides for a large independent living level with smaller levels of assisted living and health care/ skilled nursing. During the past two decades, PMMA has been slowly moving its system toward the CCRC model. Even though we have made significant strides, our system still remains imbalanced in the world of CCRC’s. Upon a careful analysis of our properties, it became clear that the Kansas City campus, with its predominantly health care focused model, could not easily convert to a CCRC campus. After much analysis, deliberation and discussion with the senior leadership team, the Board of Trustees approved the sale of KCPM.
participate in walks and runs at this time of year to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association.
While saddened by the idea of selling KCPM, PMMA was and is confident that we are leaving our residents in good hands. The sale of Kansas City Presbyterian Manor to Riverbend, an operating subsidiary of The Ensign Group Inc., was completed and the campus transferred, on July 1.
The event takes place from 7 to 11 a.m. at the adult sports complex, 5101 Speicher Road in Lawrence. The morning starts with a 5K run/ walk followed by a day of fun for the whole family. Women and the Civil War: The hidden history Our next Osher Class will focus on women during the Civil War. Dates and times for the class are coming soon, so watch for more information. Just as American women were starting to question their roles in society, civil war broke out and changed everything. This course introduces you to fascinating stories you’ve never heard — the women who fought as men, the ladies
pressed into jobs in government and factories, the slave women who ran to freedom and found work with the Union Army. Leaders of the new women’s rights movement thought America was changing before their eyes. But their dreams would die after the war, in a raucous 1867 election in Kansas. Aaron Barnhart and Diane Eickhoff co-authored The Big Divide: A Travel Guide to Historic and Civil War
Sites in the Missouri-Kansas Border Region. They publish this and other history titles through Quindaro Press and frequently give presentations on behalf of the Kansas and Missouri humanities councils. To register, go online to our website www.osher.ku.edu and or call the Osher office at 785-864-5823 and talk to a registration staff member who can answer questions and/ register.
Hawaii Day! Hele mei hoohiwahiwa! For those who don’t speak Hawaiian, that means Come Celebrate! Which is exactly what Lawrence Presbyterian Manor does every year on the third Friday of August in honor of Hawaii’s Statehood Day. Hawaii entered the Union on Aug. 21, 1959, (the third Friday in August) when President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a proclamation making Hawaii the 50th state. Hawaiians were celebrating in the streets. Local stores closed for the day and parades of school children were proudly reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Hawaii songwriter Harry Owens even wrote a song to commemorate the day:
Join the forty-nine.”
When Hawaii falls in line
Here in the middle of the USA, this holiday gives residents and staff an opportunity to come together for summertime fun. The day’s agenda has a Hawaiian themed lunch menu and the famous Flamingo Fling game that involves – you guessed it – flinging flamingos for prizes! Staff and residents are also encouraged to dress in Hawaiian inspired clothing to join in the festivities.
We sing a song of gladness as we
This year, we will celebrate Hawaii
“Hawaii is the fiftieth star in the U.S.A. Aloha means how joyful we are For at last we are brothers today We know that you’ll be happy
