Native American art topic of course Lawrence Presbyterian Manor will host an Osher Lifelong Learning course this month on the topic of “Native American Art: How It Speaks to Us.” The class will take place in the chapel/recreation room from 2 to 4 p.m. on three Tuesdays: Oct. 6, 13, and 20. Instructor Gil Nichols will show how Native Americans developed their artistic expressions uninfluenced by Old World aesthetic philosophies. The course will examine Native American art—its form, function, construction techniques, values, design and symbolism. With slides of and objects from Nichols’s personal collection of art and antiquities, we’ll discuss what they tell us about Native American consciousness, philosophies and science. Nichols has taught classes on Native American cultures, his lifelong passion, at William Jewell College for 14 years and at the University of Missouri–Kansas City for 10 years. The University of Kansas is an affiliate of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. The organization is committed to creating accessible and innovative learning environments, with special focus on participants age 50 and over.

Community Matters October 2015

My serious love of music developed when I was an usher at Northrop Auditorium at the University of Minnesota while I was in graduate school. While I was growing up, my family attended several musical theater productions in Minneapolis. I attended many choir concerts at Carleton College (my alma mater) and “across the way” at St. Olaf College. Several friends at college had large record collections which they – and I – enjoyed. I think I nearly wore out one friend’s recording of Handel’s “Messiah.” At Northrop, I heard many outstanding musicians and groups. A highlight each year was the week of operas with gorgeous music and excellent singers. One evening, we arrived to usher and realized that something was wrong: the scheduled performer couldn’t get to Minneapolis due to weather. But it happened that famous contralto Marian Anderson was in town for another engagement. Earlier in the day, she had asked if she could practice at Northrop. When the scheduled performer cancelled, the director asked Marian to substitute. She did, and it was a wonderful concert! A very special memory is that when the concerts were over, a group of us frequently walked from Northrop to Totino’s, an Italian restaurant, for pizza. The pizza was good, and the staff always welcomed us. We decided that in our tuxedos and long dresses (required by Northrop), they thought we added a touch of class. Today, I continue to listen to operas on my Sirius radio. And I really enjoy watching operas and other concerts when they are broadcast live from the Metropolitan Opera in New York City and shown at the Southwind movie theater here in Lawrence on Saturdays. — Art Thomas, resident
