Zero-deficiency rating highlights staff achievement Lawrence Presbyterian Manor earned a zero-deficiency survey from the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services following its annual inspection July 14, 2015. “We are very proud of our staff’s achievement,” said Christie Patrick, executive director. “It is their commitment to our mission and residents that led to a deficiencyfree community. By being blessed with a great team that is dedicated to Lawrence Presbyterian Manor and each other, we’ve created a foundation that enables us to provide quality services for seniors every day.” Each year, senior living communities are surveyed by their licensing agency for compliance of regulations established by the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services. These regulations, which number in the hundreds, are designed to ensure a standard of care is met. By meeting this standard, senior living communities are able to renew their licenses and continue to provide care. SURVEY, continued on page 2
Angora entrepreneur
Residents’ granddaughter revives lost art Kelly Bohling, granddaughter of resident Effie Simmons, stopped by to show her Angora rabbit, Hector, and the yarn he helps her make. Kelly has been spinning Angora yarn for two and a half years. As a young girl, Kelly learned to knit with her grandmother Effie. In college, Kelly’s interest in knitting peaked again, and she decided to raise her own Angora rabbits. “I enjoy resurrecting an old art that is rarely done anymore,” Kelly said. Kelly has a website, ThreeRabbitYarns.com, and an Etsy store that features her products. She also works on custom orders.
Don’t fall for
these myths.
reduce your risk of falling
Many people think falls are a natural part of aging, however, they can be prevented. In honor of National Fall Prevention Month, we’re providing you with tips to decrease your risk.
“Among people who are 65 and older, one in three will have a fall each year. It’s one of those statistics that I find mind-blowing,” Forck said.
Lori Forck, a regional wellness coordinator for RehabCare, says even a few simple exercises can build up strength where you need it to help keep you balanced and on your feet.
The National Council on Aging provides proven fall prevention programs for seniors across the nation. To dispel misconceptions about falls, the council debunks common myths, such as:
Myth 1: Falling happens to other people.
Fact: 1 in 3 older adults fall every year in the U.S.
Myth 2: If I limit my activity or stay home, I won’t fall.
Fact: Staying active will help you remain independent and healthy.
