Eugene McAdam with traditional “Blarney Stones.”
St. Patrick’s Day tradition continues Making Blarney Stone cakes has been a St. Patrick’s Day tradition for the McAdam family ever since Gene McAdam came home from World War II. This year, the family relocated the tradition to Manor of the Plains. Several of the McAdam children and grandchildren visited in March to spend the day creating the individual cakes, which represent the Blarney Stone, a block of limestone built into Blarney Castle, near Cork, Ireland. Legend has it that kissing the stone will give you the gift of gab (specifically, “great eloquence or skill at flattery,” according to Wikipedia). Gene’s mother started the annual ritual after he and four of his brothers were discharged from the service, Michelle said. “When Mom and Dad were at home, it was a day everyone spent together,” Michelle said. “Dad’s tradition is he is the taste tester and then he takes a nap.” Gene and Maxine McAdam moved to the manor a couple of years ago; she passed away in March 2015. The family didn’t make Blarney Stones last year while she was ill. But the youngest members of the family didn’t want the tradition to end. “Dad’s grandkids are the ones who said, ‘We’ve ST. got to make Blarney Stones,’” Michelle said. “It’s important to their generation. Fortunately, they were welcome to set up the operation here at Manor of the Plains. And it takes a real assembly line to make the cakes. They start with spongecake, which is then cut into cubes and frozen, to make it easier to work with. Next, the cakes are rolled first in a powdered sugar glaze, then in crushed, salted peanuts. Michelle said she appreciates how the manor welcomes families for special events. When her mother died, they also had a family dinner here after the rosary.
For Blarney Stone day, the McAdam family members wore matching green T-shirts from a reunion that took place last year. Gene and his nine siblings each chose a different color to distinguish their families. On the front of the shirt is a photo of Gene’s parents and all 10 of their children. Michelle said both of her dad’s grandparents were born in Ireland, and he grew up in a large Irish-
American community around St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Kingman, Kansas. “Mom and Dad always had some Irish stuff around the house,” she said. “He’s hardcore Irish.”

2 cups sugar | 4 eggs | 1 cup of boiling water | 2 cups flour 3 tsp baking powder Beat eggs and sugar, then add the boiling water. Sift flour and baking powder together, then blend on low speed. Bake at 350. DO NOT OPEN OVEN DOOR FOR 30 MINUTES! DO NOT GREASE PAN! Glaze 1 2-lb bag of powdered sugar 1 ¼ cup of milk (warmed) 1 tsp vanilla You will also need 16 ounces of ground peanuts (grind the peanuts pretty fine to get them to stick better) Make glaze. Cut cake in small pieces (frozen cake works best). Coat in glaze. Roll in peanuts. Tips: • We have also found that if one person dips the cake in the glaze and another person rolls the cake in the peanuts that it isn’t quite as messy. Put about 2 cups of peanuts in a small bowl and 2 cups of glaze in a small bowl, because the glaze gets cake crumbs in it and the peanuts get lumpy. You have to get fresh glaze and peanuts frequently.
