PMMA rebalances portfolio with sale of Kansas City campus In the more than six and a half decades Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America has provided care for and advocated for the aging in Kansas and Missouri, the senior retirement landscape has changed dramatically. PMMA remains committed to our mission of providing quality senior services guided by Christian values and to meeting the ever-changing needs of today’s seniors. Seniors want a full continuum of care, with an emphasis on active living and wellness. Out of this demand, the Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) model was born. This model provides for a large independent living level with smaller levels of assisted living and health care/ skilled nursing. During the past two decades, PMMA has been slowly moving its system toward the CCRC model. Even though we have made significant strides, our system still remains imbalanced in the world of CCRC’s. Back to school: School brings Dana Johnson rich memories It’s the time of year when students get shiny new supplies and are secretly relieved that summer is coming to a close. It’s back to school season, and for teachers like Dana Johnson, it’s one of the happiest times of year. Dana taught art for 35 years, retiring in 1986. Recently, he was moved to write a poem, not about going back to school, but about the end of the school year and the melancholy it evokes in an instructor who truly loves his work. “The hallways and galleries are lifeless echo chambers,” it begins. He had just written it when he saw our request for back-to-school reminiscences for the August issue of Community Matters. Teaching art is more personal than teaching other subjects, Dana said. Instead of big lecture halls, there are usually just a handful of students in JOHNSON, continued on page 2

Upon a careful analysis of our properties, it became clear that the Kansas City campus, with its predominantly health care focused model, could not easily convert to a CCRC campus. After much analysis, deliberation and discussion with the senior leadership team, the Board of Trustees approved the sale of KCPM. While saddened by the idea of selling KCPM, PMMA was and is confident that we are leaving our residents in good hands. The sale of Kansas City Presbyterian Manor to Riverbend, an operating subsidiary of The Ensign Group Inc., was completed and the campus transferred, on July 1.

“When you’re working one-on-one with students, you get to know them. You develop a rapport,” he said. “In a way, it’s why I wrote that poem. At the end of school, when they all leave, you’re losing a bunch of kids that you’ve established certain bond with. You miss them at first, but of course you know they’re anxious to get back home.”

echo chambers,

Dana started teaching at a small school in northeastern Missouri. Next, he served as a graduate instructor in the department of design at the University of Kansas, then moved on to what is now Southeast Missouri State. Finally, he moved to the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, where he spent the lion’s share of his career — 20 years. Today he still sketches a little, but writing has taken over as his main creative pursuit. Dana blocks out time every day to work on short stories. It’s how he keeps his mind nimble, he said — along with the occasional poem. Here is the one he shared with us, calling it “a college instructor’s perspective from 55 years ago.”

shrouded in a ghost-laden mist of silence that eddies around the disorder of studio easels, tables and chairs where they were left; three unclaimed pieces of art hang desolately on the unlit display wall, faint residuals of the chatter, the easy laughter, the beautiful faces and random energies of youthful moments. With them gone I have a queer feeling of no longer being what I was. — by Dana Johnson Like us on Facebook

Bravo of the Month The Bravo of the Month goes to June Malin, CMA in McFarland Center, for not one or two Bravos this month but three recognitions of her above-and-beyond service and teamwork! Julie Stewart writes, “June noticed that no one was available to call Bingo one day, so she took the initiative to go get the needed equipment and call Bingo for the residents! Thanks, June!” Another Bravo mentioned her willingness to stay after her shift to help settle neighbors in after watching a late movie out in the courtyard. The third was from family member Peg Martin. “June is a shining example of a person who brings their heart for caring about others to the tasks at hand. She always goes the second mile with thoughtfulness and humor. Words cannot express my gratitude that she is here to help care for my loved one.”

Dining Services We will focus on dining services in an upcoming issue of Community Matters. What foods do you connect through your memories? How has food shaped your life and recollections? If you’ve got a story to share, contact Marketing Director Noelle Dickinson and your story could be featured in an upcoming edition of Community Matters.
