Veteran residents recognized with Honor Flight Rex Graham and Don Croft are the latest Newton Presbyterian Manor residents to join the ranks of veterans who have taken the Kansas Honor Flight. Both men were encouraged to send in their applications by resident Harold Reid, who took the flight last year. Alvin Friesen, another Presbyterian Manor resident, took an Honor Flight in May 2014. “It meant a lot to just see people when we went into places and to have them greet us like they did,” said Rex. “And when we got back to Wichita, we had a really good reception from people. Families and friends were there. Everywhere we went, people were just great. That really meant a lot to all of us.” Rex joined four WWII veterans and 27 Korean War veterans, including Don, with their chaperones in mid-May. They flew to Washington, D.C., on Southwest Airlines and spent a full day sightseeing, which included touring the World War II, Korean, Lincoln and Vietnam Memorials, Arlington National Cemetery, the Iwo Jima Memorial and driving by the White House and U.S. Capitol. They also had lunch at the Air Force HONOR FLIGHT, continued on page 2

funds through no fault of their own. Thank you for considering a gift to help our residents who have a financial need.
Every year a delegation of veterans and military officials from Korea travel to the Korean War memorial for a wreath ceremony. The Kansas Honor Flight delegation happened to be at the memorial on the same day to witness this ceremony and meet veterans from the other side of the conflict. HONOR FLIGHT, continued from page 1

Memorial. “It was a very pleasant experience,” said Don. “The people that were in charge of the flight were very nice and everything was outstanding.” Don went into the Navy in 1948 as an airplane mechanic and was based in the U.S. After he got out in 1952, he “bummed around for awhile” taking one job after another. “And then I found a young lady I thought a lot of and we got married.” Don eventually followed in the footsteps of his father-in-law and went into the construction business. He and Dolores had four children. Rex was in the Air Force for about two years in the 28th recon wing in South Dakota. He was in the reproduction section where they processed the film that was brought back in from the missions. “That was back in the days of mimeographs,”
said Rex. During the end of his time there they were printing maps from the film that was brought in. After he got out, Rex helped his dad put in a propane plant in Peabody and worked there for the next 20 years. He and his wife, Marge, have been married 63 years and have two kids. If you’re a veteran or know someone who is and who would be interested in the Kansas Honor Flight, get more information at kansashonorflight.org.
~ Summer Fun ~ Late spring and early summer on the Presbyterian Manor campus are full of holiday celebrations, day trips and programs. May is also Older Americans Month which brings a full schedule of events and treats for residents and for employees. Cinco De Mayo was celebrated with an outdoor performance by Newton High School’s Azteca Dancers. Apple-a-Day preschoolers took their turns whacking the piñata. Ten Haury Place residents and employees bundled up for a cool stroll and picnic at Sedgwick County Zoo. Family members are always welcome to ride along or meet the bus for these outings. Contact Melinda Ebersole, director of activities, at 316-283-5400, mebersole@pmma. org.
Musical Performance The Golden Notes from Grand Central, formerly the Newton Area Senior Center, were the guest performers at an event in June.
Lunch, Blooms and Bridge is a favorite annual event at Wichita’s Botanica that many of our ladies attend year after year. Other day trips included a lunch out at Carriage Crossing in Hutchinson for McFarland Center and a day trip to Wichita for the Museum of World Treasures and lunch at Old Chicago. Trips are often planned based on the suggestions of residents and families in addition to the Wellness Committee which is made up of resident and advisory council representatives and activity department staff. Resident Survey Across all levels of living, residents report positive relationships with staff and would recommend Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America (PMMA) to a friend. The PMMA resident survey is a proud 11-year tradition that shows our commitment to resident input from PMMA communities in Kansas and Missouri. As we examine the survey results, it is important to thank YOU — our residents — for giving your opinions. Because of you, our mission is an important part of every day.

Campus Dental Services opens doors Health Ministries Clinic (HMC) and Newton Presbyterian Manor have partnered with a goal of improving oral health by offering residents the opportunity to receive dental hygiene services on campus. Good oral hygiene is an important element of overall health. Research shows that reducing bacteria in the mouth can also reduce the risk of other serious health problems such as heart disease, diabetes, pneumonia, unplanned weight loss and pain. This program provides on-site assessments and preventative dental cleanings by a registered dental hygienist who can refer residents on for further services. The program is especially designed to make this care convenient and accessible to those who have not been receiving dental care and for those who find getting out to appointments difficult. It is, however, available to all residents either through Medicaid, private insurance or on a sliding scale fee. A new clinical room has been created in Kalb Villa (assisted living) to accommodate this and other on-site medical services. Residents or family members interested in knowing more about the program may contact Helen Brown at 316-283-5400 or hbrown@pmma.org.
Maria Hernandez meets Jennifer Carter, dental hygienist, for her first campus appointment.

Bravo of the Month
This month’s Bravo goes to Sherrie Kelly in Assisted Living. Resident Willard Weide writes, “Last night when I was swallowing a large pill, it stuck in my throat. I couldn’t breathe and was in a lot of pain. Sherrie gave me the Heimlich Maneuver. After that, I could breathe. I owe her my life. How do I express my thanks?” Rarely do situations like this arise, but when they do, well-trained and quick-thinking employees like Sherrie are exactly whom you want to have around. Thank you, Sherrie!
Coming up in Community Matters In an upcoming Community Matters, we’ll be focusing on senior safety, fall prevention and Grandparents’ Day. How do you keep your balance? What have you found to be most helpful in aging strong and avoiding injuries as you age? What’s your favorite thing about being a grandparent or great-grandparent? What wisdom do you want to pass along to the next generation? If you’d like to share your thoughts or memories, contact Marketing Director Noelle Dickinson and your story may be selected for inclusion in an upcoming Community Matters newsletter.
