Chaplain’s corner: What is man? By Jerroll Martens, chaplain, Newton Presbyterian Manor

The Psalmist asked this question in Psalm 8 as he observed the vast universe. Science now can see into space and view objects that are billions of light years away, and they believe there is much more they cannot see. God created our great universe, but this passage and others make it clear that God’s greatest concern is for man. The universe can help us understand that His care and love is for us. “For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is His loving kindness toward those who fear Him.” (Ps 103:11) As the heavens cannot be measured, so it is impossible for Him to turn away His own people. The universe also reminds us that as the heavens are high above the earth, so are His ways higher than our ways, CHAPLAIN, continued on page 5

New Wellness Director seeks new ideas Kaitlyn Hollaway is ready to be a resource for anyone at Newton Presbyterian Manor who wants to improve his or her health and wellness. But as our new wellness director, Kaitlyn also is eager to hear from residents and staff about new classes or events they would like to see. “The goal is to make Presbyterian Manor an environment where it is easy to make healthy choices for your life,” said Kaitlyn, who joined our team in April. Kaitlyn plans to survey residents about their interests to add new exercise classes and other opportunities to get active. She is already developing cooking classes for residents and staff to learn easy, healthy DIRECTOR, continued on page 2

develop a wellness program for employees. She also teaches kids’ nutrition classes and water exercise at the Wichita YMCA.

When Kaitlyn was getting her master’s degree in exercise science at Wichita State University, she realized that aging baby boomers were about to drive a major shift in our population. So she opted to earn a certificate in aging along with her degree. As it turned out, the classes focused on aging had information on exercise and nutrition that can be applied to everyone.

Before coming to Presbyterian Manor, Kaitlyn was a clinical research site manager for the KU School of Medicine’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science. “It was fascinating learning about depression, bipolar, Alzheimer’s and schizophrenia in more detail, and it’s mind-blowing how much we still do not know about those diseases,” she said. “It really sheds a light on how many people are still suffering and how important research is.”

Now, Kaitlyn is already working with other staff members to

other users set up individual fitness plans. To get started, she interviews people ahead of their visit to find out about what they want to work on, from strength and flexibility to improving heart health. When they come in, she gives tours and help them learn to use the equipment. “Each of us is unique in personality and situation. I want to be able to take that uniqueness and help the individual develop a routine that works from them,” Kaitlyn said. Let’s all be sure to give Kaitlyn a warm welcome to the Newton Presbyterian Manor family!

His thoughts higher than our thoughts. (Isaiah 55:8,9) Of all of God’s creation, mankind is His greatest concern. To meet our greatest need, He gave his Son for our redemption. What a great and wonderful God! Newton Presbyterian Manor

Bravo of the Month The Bravo this month goes to Valerie Robbins, administrative assistant. Noelle Dickinson writes, “Valerie took on the development of the local Founders Day video and dove into the technology and planning to make it happen. When one camera didn’t work, we found another way, and she adapted with such positivity and confidence. Thank you for lending your talents to a project that was far above and beyond!” Valerie received certificates for dinner and a movie for two as a small thank you for her efforts. Write your own bravo for an employee who has demonstrated leadership, service, teamwork, dignity and respect. Bravos are posted in the main hall and in the McFarland Center lobby.

Continuing education We will be featuring employees who have continued their education with Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America’s help in an upcoming issue of Community Matters. If you have a story to tell about an employee you know is continuing their education, or if you just want to tell the world what you love about living in your senior living community, we want to share your story. If you’ve got a story to share, contact Marketing Director Noelle Dickinson and your story could be featured in an upcoming edition of Community Matters.
