Chaplain’s corner: Think on these things By Jerroll Martens, Newton Presbyterian Manor chaplain

The instruction at the end of Philippians 4:8 is “think on these things.” The Bible also reminds us “as a man thinks, so is he.” Let’s take a look at this list of things to think on: Things TRUE; true and always true about God, eternity, ourselves, the world around us. Things HONEST; things decent, honorable, reputable, respectful and always honest. Things JUST; what is right before God and man, what we owe God and others. Things PURE; purity in mind and actions. Focused on residents When Laura Stewart was getting her social work degree at Bethel College, she envisioned a career of working with foster families and adoptions. The idea of working in long term care never entered her mind. But after school, the picture began to look different. Laura did start out working in foster care. It’s difficult work, and before long she realized she needed a change. That’s what brought her to Newton Presbyterian Manor. Laura joined us on the activities staff about three years ago. “That was a good starting place for me. It was a good foundation to long term care,” she said. After a year, Laura had the opportunity to join the social services department. She served residents in Haury Place as well as guests in our PATH rehabilitation program. In January, she took over as director from Helen Brown, who retired after more than 20 years in the role. FOCUSED, continued on page 2

Things LOVELY; that which is agreeable, not sour and crabby, a loving and serving heart. Things of GOOD REPORT; cultivating virtues of kindness, purity, respect, uplifting to God and society. Finally, any other VIRTUES uplifting and positive. PRAISE should be given to God and all that is good. In many ways this list describes the character of God. Surely it would please God if we “think on these things.”

Laura said she values the movement toward person-centered care for residents in long-term care. As a social worker, it’s her job to mediate when there are conflicts among residents, staff, and/or family members, and to help people through difficult transitions. But, Laura adds, person-centered care starts with basic, everyday decisions, too, like when a person chooses get up or what they want to wear. “My focus is always the resident and what they want,” Laura said, adding that the culture at Presbyterian Manor encourages that independence. “It’s a great place to work. It’s an encouraging place to be. I have always felt appreciated, and I always

felt I made a difference whether I was in activities or social services. The culture here made me want to stay.” Laura grew up near Philadelphia and came to Kansas for college in 2008. Away from work, she keeps busy with her two young sons. March is National Social Work Month – “an opportunity for social workers across the country to turn the spotlight on the profession and highlight the important contributions they make to society,” according to the National Association of Social Workers. We thank Laura, Helen Brown and Marilyn Koehn for the countless ways they serve residents and their families, and our employees. Like us on Facebook

Bravo of the Month Janelle Nickel, housekeeping, received not one but FOUR bravos for her efforts for the Anderson Place neighborhood this month. From the nursing team: “Thank you for always pitching in to help out without ever being asked. Many times you have helped in the kitchen when we were busy, and you made sure the residents ate on time and had their coffee and juice at breakfast. You never grumble about anything. You have a great attitude and always go above and beyond every day. Thank you!” Julie Stewart, director of health services in McFarland Center, wrote, “Janelle was off-duty, working out in the wellness center, when she saw a health care nurse gathering supplies for isolation precautions. When she heard the nurse say she couldn’t find isolation bags, she gathered them up and on her own time, brought them to health care for us. Thank you!!”
