Chaplain’s corner: The Heavens speak By Jerroll Martens, chaplain Newton Presbyterian Manor
One of the ways God speaks is through nature. “The heavens declare the glory of God…” Psalm 19:1. Nature is not God, but nature can tell us there is a God. Only God could create the heavens, and only He could create a flower. There is not a place on earth where God’s creation is not evident. Romans 1 tells us that the evidence of God’s creation in nature is so plain that no person on earth can claim ignorance of the fact that God exists. Knowing that God exists does not mean that we know God. This Psalm tells us the sacred record of the Word of God gives understanding in knowing God. The Bible is God’s record of His love in sending His son, Jesus, to be the sacrifice for sin’s penalty. In knowing God through a relationship with His Son, CHAPLAIN, continued on page 5
Don Croft works out in the wellness center nearly every day.
Move every day:
How one resident commits to stay fit It’s not always easy to keep up a regular exercise routine. But as we age, staying active is the key to independence and well-being — perhaps more than most other times in our life. Don Croft understands this. Almost every day, Don crosses the street from his Broadway apartment to work out in the wellness center. His commitment to fitness shows us that a little exercise every day has a lot of benefits. Don played a little basketball in school and in the Navy, but he wasn’t a star athlete. He isn’t training for a marathon. His goal is modest: to stay active. Having the wellness center close by at Presbyterian Manor makes MOVE, continued on page 2

it easy, and having a lot of options for activities keeps it interesting. “I kind of vary my routine,” he said. “One day I’ll do the Nustep, then the next day I’ll do the treadmill.” He also hits the Fit Express circuit machines most days. Melinda Ebersole, director of activities, said Don sets a great example for his neighbors. “You can count on seeing Don, rain or shine, walking over from his apartment to get his workout routine done before meeting others for coffee in the dining room,” she said. “He’s an inspiration with his commitment to daily exercise and good health.”

Don said he believes others have followed his fitness example, and he’s glad. “I just think if a person sets an example in front of other people, sometimes it helps them and encourages them, too.” If you have been thinking about starting a fitness routine, be sure to check with your doctor first. The benefits for older adults go well beyond weight control or heart health, too. Even simple, regular movement helps build the muscles used in balance, and it improves flexibility. In women at risk of osteoporosis, even light weight training can build bone density.
As we heard at last month’s Healthy Learning Lecture, movement is one of the best ways to alleviate pain. LaVeta Jarrett, ARPN, shared that even gentle exercise gets blood flowing to areas in pain and promotes healing. Thanks to his desire to stay active, Don gets to join us on many of our day trips, too. It’s one more way to stay involved and engaged, and that’s a big part of overall wellness, too. Exercise classes and personal training are available in the wellness center. Call 316-283-5400 to get started.
~Thank you! ~ We want to say a huge thank you to Carol Heinel and the sewing circle at First Presbyterian Church for volunteering to mend clothing. They have been so quick and cheerful in their work! Other volunteer opportunities abound. Call Melinda Ebersole, director of life enrichment at 316-283-5400, mebersole@pmma.org if you are willing to take care of houseplants, help with mail delivery, do manicures, or play canasta, bridge, dominoes or other table games. We always appreciate volunteers willing to visit one on one with health care residents and especially could use men to help us connect with male residents. Ask questions or come observe sometime. It’s a rewarding experience! Like us on Facebook

The Barn in Burrton Rainy weather called for comfort food and there’s nothing quite like the chicken fried steak at The Barn in Burrton. Campus neighbors filled the new bus for this special meal. The wheels on the bus just kept turning, as a group from Haury Place ventured to Red Lobster the day before.
Faithful volunteers Volunteers like Marge and Ed Harms, left, make the Newton Public Library’s ENLITE program happen! On the second Monday of every month, the group brings dozens of books for residents to choose from, as well as handselecting monthly collections for those who need assistance.

Bravo of the Month Bravo of the Month goes to Dan Mueller and it happens to come from his supervisor, Steve Seidl! “Dan works behind the scenes and deserves much more recognition than he receives. What amazing work Dan does every time, with every project he is asked to do. Dan never complains, never turns down a challenge, and goes above and beyond to take an area or room and use his magic to make it look like it’s brand new. He most recently completed the east ramp area including stripping wallpaper, painting, adding trim and painting the metal heating units. He refinished all the shelving the plants sit on so it is nice, clean and shiny. The plants are even smiling because they have an area to be proud of as well! Dan is a very dedicated craftsman that has a skill few people have. He can take a piece of wood that looks as if it should be thrown away and turn it into something beautiful! We are truly blessed to have a person with his skills and work ethic here at the Manor. The east ramp is just one of many areas that Dan has taken apart and put back together to make it brand new. Dan, thanks for all you do. We appreciate your talent and hard work!”
Vacation memories We will be featuring summertime, Independence Day, and vacation memories in an upcoming issue of Community Matters. If you have a story to tell about any of these topics, or if you just want to tell the world what you love about living in your senior living community, we want to share your story. If you’ve got a story to share, contact Marketing Director Noelle Dickinson and your story could be featured in an upcoming edition of Community Matters.
