The light By Jerroll Martens, chaplain Newton Presbyterian Manor

“The Lamb is the light thereof.” (Rev 21:23) The scene in this scripture is in heaven, where there is no need for the sun or moon. Christ is the “light thereof.” Light reminds us of joy. A cheerful person is like a light spreading its beam. The joy of saints in heaven will be that Christ loved them, bought them, cleansed and fitted them for that wonderful place. Light also speaks of knowledge. We speak of the “age of enlightenment.” In the presence of Christ, the things that puzzled us will be known to us. Light also manifests. Things not seen in the dark are seen clearly in the light. The believer is not now what he will be, for when we see Him, we shall be like Him, clearly manifesting His righteousness given to us. Believers also are spoken of as “children of light” who should walk in His ways. Light dispels darkness, so needed in a dark world of evil. Jesus spoke of Himself as the light of the world and His children as the reflectors of that light. Thank God for a prepared place of perfect light and for the light He now gives us on our pilgrimage.

The Walk to End Alzheimer’s team from 2015.

Join us: Walk to End Alzheimer’s Join a team of staff, residents and family members as they participate in a walk to end Alzheimer’s Disease on October 13 in Wichita. The two-mile walk starts at 11 a.m. (with registration opening at 8 a.m. and a ceremony at 10 a.m.) at Intrust Bank Arena in downtown Wichita. Anyone can sign up to walk, and there is no registration fee. However participants are encouraged to make a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association. This is the eighth year that Activity Director Melinda Ebersole has coordinated a team from the community, and while the reason behind the event is somber, she finds the walk itself to be both uplifting and inspiring. “I just love seeing the different families and the kids that are involved,” said Melinda. “It’s a very sad disease, but that day brings out how much support and love is there for the families and caretakers that go through this.” WALK, continued on page 2

WALK, continued from page 1

This year, the team has set a goal of raising $1,205. In addition to funds raised through direct donations, the community will also be selling custom t-shirts with the proceeds going to the Alzheimer’s Association. This year’s shirt features a picture of an elephant with the words, “Memories Matter” on the front and the words, “Hope, Fight, Cure” on the back. Shirts are $15 each. Besides being a fun way to raise additional money for the fight against Alzheimer’s, the shirts also serve as a tribute to those affected by the disease within the community.

Community Matters

“Since we take care of so many residents with the disease, it holds special place in our hearts and (having the shirts) makes it mean a little more,” said Melinda. “We take pride in them, and each year there’s a different design.”

To purchase a shirt, stop by Melinda’s office or email her at mebersole@pmma.org. Registration for the walk can be completed on the Wichita Alzheimer’s Walk webpage by searching for Newton Presbyterian Manor under “Find a Team.”

and stories

We were blessed to have Gracia Burnham speak to our men’s and women’s Bible study participants during their summer study break. She shared lessons and stories from her more than a year in captivity in the Philippines. She and her husband, Martin, served where she and husband Martin were missionaries with New Tribes Mission and where Martin died in the 17th and final gun battle between their captors and the Philippine army who rescued her. Her message of God’s nearness and encouragement whatever trial or “trail” we are walking, be it in the jungle or in health, relationships or other struggles, was uplifting and inspiring.

Fun at community assembly Our quarterly community assembly gathering was treated to a photo and video safari to Tanzania, East Africa, by photographers Jim and Cindy Griggs. The Griggs have been active photographers since 1976. During the gathering, biannual elections were held for the resident council executive committee and for area representatives to the cottages/ duplexes, Garden Apartments, Broadway Apartments and Kalb Villa/Anderson Place.

Community to host first-ever trunk or treat Stock up on the candy and pull together your best Halloween costume because trunk or treat is coming to Presbyterian Manor this October 26. Organized by the Employee Committee—and open to all of Newton’s superheroes, cowboys and princesses—the event will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. in the circle drive off Seventh Street and will feature trick or treating, hot dogs, cotton candy and a photo booth. While this will be the first trunk-ortreat event held at the community, Activity Director Melinda Ebersole is convinced that anyone who attends will have a great time.

going to be fun involved.” Besides being a new event for the community, it is likely that the entire concept of trick or treating in a parking lot will be new to some of its residents—a possibility that Melinda believes will add another element of fun to the evening.

Bravo of the Month: Beccy Flottman The Bravo of the Month goes to Beccy Flottman, our evening administrative assistant. Heather Wallace, assistant director of dining services wrote, “Beccy put a flier together for the employee committee. I asked her late one afternoon and she had it done by the time I came in the next morning. Beccy has a great ‘can do’ attitude and is always a huge help.” Beccy is the person we count on to welcome evening guests in person or on the phone, but she also cheerfully takes on so many tasks that never hit a job description. Thanks, Beccy. We know we can count on you! Like us on Facebook

because a lot of them probably didn’t do this back then,” said Melinda. “It will be interesting to see their reaction. It’s kind of like bringing the community to them.” If you are interested in donating candy for the event, or decorating your trunk, stop by the front desk at Newton Presbyterian Manor, and sign up today.
