National Hospice Month November is National Hospice Month, and to recognize the importance of hospice services to quality end of life care, Presbyterian Manor’s Heart and Soul Hospice would like to share Clayton’s story. It was not long after Clayton was diagnosed with a life-limiting illness that he was told that curative treatment was no longer an option. Clayton quickly made the decision to seek hospices services. At first, Clayton thought hospice was a way to avoid burdening his family with his illness. Clayton soon began to understand that by deciding to utilize hospice, he had put together a supportive team for himself and his entire family. Together, Clayton, his family, and the hospice team created a plan of care that included Clayton’s medical needs as well as emotional and spiritual needs for himself and his family. Clayton’s wishes are prioritized. Clayton is not a fan of baseball, but his family loves the game. Clayton’s HOSPICE, continued on page 2

Public safety officials tour campus Recent natural disasters around our part of the world have many people evaluating their emergency preparedness, and Newton Presbyterian Manor is no exception. Over three days in September, 44 members of Newton Fire/EMS took a guided tour of our entire campus, from common areas to cottages, from attics to boiler rooms. They learned the names of every location, resident room layouts, emergency exits, and types of construction materials in each building. Each firefighter, paramedic, and EMT received a handout with all of the information they had learned. “Some of the firefighters were brand new, and they had never been in our building before,” said Steve Seidl, director of environmental services for Newton Presbyterian Manor. “It’s an opportunity not only for us to meet them but for them to see our buildings. Should there ever be an emergency situation, they will have that familiarity.” SAFETY, continued on page 3

wish was to have a baseball party for his entire family. The hospice team helped him make that happen. That day there was baseball, air hockey, and a room filled with family, laughter and smiles. Clayton beat most of us at the air hockey challenges! Clayton has been with hospice since June and is still facing terminal illness with no cure. But, with his hospice team’s focus on providing medical care and emotional support that enhances his quality of life, Clayton has had more good days to be able to make memories with his loved ones. Cottages available this winter Three cottages on our independent living campus are coming available this month. They will be remodeled and ready after the holidays. They include a one-bedroom, one-bath home, a two-bedroom, two-bath and a three-bedroom, two bath home with formal dining room and

The tour was led by maintenance supervisor Alvin Savage, who has been with Presbyterian Manor for 24 years, Steve said. “He knows it like the back of his hand.” October is a natural time to conduct the tour and meeting because National Fire Prevention Week is observed every year during the week of Oct. 9. With many natural and man-made disasters in the news, it’s only natural to want to learn more about the plans and procedures in place for our staff and our residents. Residents and their families are welcome to ask about our emergency plans at any time. Steve also tries to meet regularly with all three of our resident councils about emergency preparedness. “It’s a great opportunity for me to tell the residents what we’re doing to protect them. It’s part of my job to reassure them,” he said. It had been a while since the last Fire/EMS tour, Steve said. From now on, however, they plan to make it an annual event for personnel at all three Fire/EMS stations. “Our staff does drills as a team together, and we try to make it a learning process,” Steve said. “We feel like we are prepared.”

Steve Seidl writes, “Alvin was asked to talk to a resident on the phone. She wanted to speak to her husband who was deceased, but she didn’t remember that. Alvin became her husband for the phone conversation. He visited with her for 10 to 15 minutes, asking her questions about her day and she asked him questions about his work. It was amazing to listen to him. He never missed a beat in answering her questions, all the time trying to reassure her that she was going to be fine. This is clearly not in his job description. Alvin goes the extra mile for our residents.” Alvin, by request and training, entered a season in our resident’s mind when her husband was still alive, and connected with her in a way that gave her peace. This is truly Presbyterian Manor’s mission.

Second Timothy 3 has a list of undesirable and unsavory characteristics that will describe people in future times, such as covetous, proud, unholy, traitors, slanderers, blasphemers and unforgiving. Then the word “unthankful” also appears. Who of us would think that ingratitude could be that bad? It is one of those things that sneaks in the back door of our heart before we realize it. The Bible speaks highly of the virtue of gratitude. There are a number of simple injunctions for us to be thankful. It is a continual pattern in the book of Psalms. The Bible even refers to thankfulness as a sacrifice to God—He is so well pleased. Being around a person of ingratitude is like the smell of an unpleasant odor, while the presence of a grateful person is like the smell of a fresh flower. Let’s thank God for giving us His Son, for family and friends, and for a host of daily needs which He supplies. Newton Presbyterian Manor
