New year, new me Reflection by Sloan Dwyer

Those new year, new me goals – or resolutions – sometimes start to trickle off. Or maybe you didn’t quite get Sloan Dwyer started as you had planned with 2019. Just because January had some curve balls or you just didn’t get to it as originally planned, there is always a NEW DAY ahead.

I am the type of person who wants to buy and get anything that makes me feel like I have my life together – which no one really does, except my mom. She is always on her A game (she’s the exception here). So, give me that new calendar, the new note pads that read “woke up to be awesome” or “the grind is real” you know CAN’T STOP WON’T STOP. . . Making to do lists is my thing, so I justify all my unnecessary note pads that way. So, with the month of January, I took time to take a step back and reflect on my NewYear, New Me resolutions and altered them a smidge. One can never dream too big though, never forget that.

Parsons Presbyterian Manor honored for achievements

Parsons Presbyterian Manor received a certificate of recognition from Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America for reaching goals in fiscal year 2018, covering the months of July 1, 2017, through June 30, 2018.

The recognition came through PMMA’s Emerald Awards Program, designed to encourage its 17 locations and 2 hospices to achieve high levels of resident and employee satisfaction, meet financial goals, build philanthropic support for the organization’s mission and meet marketing goals. There are 11 areas measured for the Emerald Awards. To receive an emerald, a community has to meet its goals in all 11 areas. Certificates of recognition were given out to communities that reached their goals in one or more category. Parsons was recognized for reaching independent living resident satisfaction goals, achieving a five-star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and meeting occupancy goals.

Bruce Shogren, president and CEO of PMMA, left, and Bill Taylor, chief operating officer, right, present Maegen Pegues, executive director, a certificate for reaching goals in three categories of the PMMA Emerald Awards in fiscal year 2018.

2 COMMUNITY MATTERS JANUARY 2019

NEW YEAR continued from page 1

1. Learn to say “no” more often. (GIVEYOURSELF ALONE TIME WHEN NEEDED.)

2. Learn how to bake bread – literally any kind. (PLAN A COOKING DAY WITH MY NANA. BEST COOK EVER!)

3. Start taking my dreams and goals for myself 100% more seriously. (DOING THIS THING WHERE I MENTALLY HYPE MYSELF DAILY.) 4. Read a book every month. (REACH OUT TO PEOPLE FOR RECOMMENDATIONS. ARE LIBRARY CARDS STILL A THING? LOOK INTO THAT.)

I am really trying to work on celebrating the small victories in life. Sometimes we get so caught up with what someone else is doing with their life, we forget we weren’t made for the same path they are on. Celebrate that you made it to the gym three days of the week even though you planned on five. Or maybe you actually bought a book but haven’t opened it yet.You are headed in the right direction! Small steps are steps! Maybe take 10 minutes out of your day and reflect of your resolutions for 2019, alter them if they need to be. Wishing the best NEW year to you!
