Cool treat for hot summer nights July is national ice cream month, and our residents fondly recall making, and eating, homemade ice cream.
Mary Lee Ashcraft happily proclaimed, “Oh yes! My husband loved his homemade ice cream so much. He would sit there stirring it up many times through the week.”
It is crazy to think that now we don’t even think about hand stirring up homemade ice cream.
Another resident, Bob Andrews, expressed how a few of his family members use to bet on baseball games and whoever lost the game would be on that back porch stirring up the ice cream.
“It never failed that was the bet on the games,” Bob said.

There’s no place like Nursing Home Week
July 2018
Nursing Home Week, May 14-18, may have been awhile back, but it’s certainly something that will be remembered by staff and residents alike. This fun-filled week was a way to celebrate the many benefits of senior living communities. Activity Director Jasmine Edie put a lot of time and effort into making this “Wizard of Oz” themed week fun for all, especially considering it was her first week in this position!
“I think the residents enjoyed watching the original ‘Wizard of John Sears enjoyed Nursing Home Week by mixing up Oz’ movie. A lot of Wizard of Oz cake pops! the residents made comments about remembering the movie and how good it was. I also think making the rainbow fruit tray was an activity the residents enjoyed doing because they were just so surprised that It looked like a rainbow once we were all finished,” said Jasmine.
Jasmine’s personal favorite activity was making the witch hat toss because she loved to see the residents faces light up once they got the ring on the witch hat.

Sloan’s Spot
Great things don’t come from your comfort zone Change can always be a little overwhelming no matter the aspect of life. It is always scary when we have change in our lives and we tend to want to run and hide, especially if you are anything like me: an over-thinker with a pinch of the desire to please. When a new opportunity stumbles into my life or I want to make change, I then make a mental or physical list as to why I shouldn’t. I start thinking of reasons why I should stay in my “comfort zone.” People always say ‘follow your gut,” and it is typically right. I believe it’s always

so hard to balance between what the heart wants, head thinks and gut feels. As long as you make the best of whatever change is headed your way, what more can we do?
Change will never not be scary to me, but who is ever truly ready for what life throws at us? If you are – kudos to you! Provide yourself with a solid support system, good vibes always and a positive outlook on any new changes you face. I have a lot of changes going on right now – taking them all head on and as best as I can.

“After that week, I feel a little more prepared for what there is to come with activities. I feel like I have been thinking and moving nonstop, but I had a lot of fun with the residents and getting to know them. It has also helped me think of ways to do my job better with planning and organizing,” said Jasmine. Jasmine certainly proved she could jump in with both feet and do a phenomenal job! Some of the week’s activities included: - Wizard of Oz bingo
- Poppies flower craft
- Wizard of Oz cake pops
- Oz-themed morning exercises - Rainbow string bracelets
Resident Lois Baker said that she liked to see all of the different activities we did, and she loved the candy bar. Donna Keller said she loved the creativity.
“It was so nice to see the residents’

faces light up and chuckle at the candy connections made with the movie. My favorite one was the Smarties – used to
tie in with the Tinman from the movie, ‘if I only I had a brain,’” said Sloan, marketing director.
Thank you to all who participated in Nursing Home Week, and we look forward to more fun events and activities.
