COMING UP IN COMMUNITY MATTERS:

Everyone has a story to tell

Independence Day marks the middle of summer and holds many fond and patriotic memories. Do you have a memorable Fourth of July story to tell? For seniors, maintaining independence is important to quality of life. How do you maintain your independence while living on a senior living campus? What did you gain by moving to the campus? What surprised you about campus life? If you’ve got a story to share about independence, contact Sharla Hopper, marketing director, and your story could be featured in an upcoming edition of Community Matters.

Remember When By Wayne Mason, Chaplain

The movie Gigi hit the screens in 1958. I was three years old. I saw that movie as a child, and I was fascinated by Maurice Chevalier. In the movie, he sings the song, “I Remember It Well.” Throughout the song he is corrected on information from a special date and he responds, “I remember it well.” I love the way we remember things from our past. Isn’t it interesting how the worst of circumstances becomes

the most entertaining of stories? So many of our holidays are designed to encourage us to remember special times and events. Mother’s Day and Father’s Day give us the chance to remember how we have been taught and loved by very special parents. Memorial Day offers us the opportunity to remember how so many have given so much to provide us freedom.

My wife and I spoke to our family several years ago about our funeral and burial plans. One of the children made the statement that she didn’t care about the plans as long as, “I have a place where I can go to remember.” We don’t bury our memories, we treasure them. We

learn from them. We grow with them.

1 Thessalonians 1:2-3 includes these words: “We always thank God for all of you and continually mention you in our prayers. We remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.” Enjoy your memories as you walk through life.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for placing people and experiences into my life. Through them, I have been able to grow and appreciate all thatYou have provided. Amen.
