Memory care connects mind, body, heart

Solarium addition: From dreams to donations Walk to End Alzheimer’s Tranquility House at Rolla Presbyterian Manor offers a dedicated memory care neighborhood, providing services and compassion for the everchanging needs of seniors with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. We provide specialty programs designed to engage the mind and provide purpose, as well as plenty of social opportunities for residents and their loved one. Campus leaders hope to have a new solarium here by next fall. Adding a solarium to the end of Tranquility House has been something Ann Caudill, executive director, has wanted for some time. As donations are coming in, it looks like it could soon become a reality. “We would love to have it available and ready to go by next fall,” said Ann. The plan is to create a solarium at the end of the hallway that is currently a porch and would provide access through the garden all year long. “We’re going to enclose the porch with glass, have furniture, some type of flooring, and add heating and cooling so it can go year-round. The neat part is that residents can go from their dining/living area and go outdoors to the enclosed garden, take the meandering walkway through the grass and end SOLARIUM - continued on page 4

Write to remember Oh, that my words were recorded, that they were written on a scroll, that they were inscribed with an iron tool on lead or engraved in rock forever! (Job 19:23-24, NIV)

Writing rarely seems to come naturally for most people. If parents could make their children write everything from age two through adulthood, writing would be more normal than talking. When it comes to recording things for future recollection, writing beats talking every time. Writing is possibly the single best memory tool ever invented by humans. Recording your thoughts, memories and dreams in writing preserves them for you and your descendants. To remember the past, keep a journal. Journaling provides a vehicle for remembering the small events and current points of view in your life. MEMORY - continued from page 1

the benefits of memory care has benefited her aunt firsthand. “She’s deteriorating mentally. I think they take really good care of her and they’ve been really good about communicating. She participates in the activities to a degree. They’ve started more activities like coloring and games people with Alzheimer’s can play. I’m really tickled to see

It also becomes an outlet for your emotions, including times of joy and times of frustration. A journal or diary preserves the memory of people and things that only were present in your life for a short time. Adding a picture here and there enhances the memories. To accomplish your goals, write them down. Recording realistic goals in writing makes the odds of achieving them go up dramatically. Writing goals provides them shape and attaches them to a plan. It also keeps them in front of you so they do not fall by the wayside. As you reach various goals, a sense of accomplishment will come from crossing them off your list. To keep your appointments, learn to record what you need to remember. People who struggle with memory that because Betty’s always been a game-player and wants to do things. If not, she feels helpless. I think she’s happy there,” said Judy. Betty has been living in memory care for about two years. She started out in the cottages about five years ago. “She chose Rolla Presbyterian Manor. After her husband passed away, she, my sister and my sisterin-law went around Rolla looking

issues find that maintaining lists of important items improves their personal performance. It is easier to remember to maintain and check a list than to recall everything on it from memory. Start each day by copying the leftovers from yesterday onto today’s list. As the day progresses, mark off the items that are no longer needed and add the new ones that come along. For tasks or appointments in the future, keeping a calendar or planner handy assists you in remembering commitments. Your writing does not need to be eloquent to be effective. Write consistently and with purpose. Record your goals, your deeds and your plans. At the least, you will improve your ability to remember what is important. Who knows, your words may benefit your life and the lives of others who may someday read your words.◆ at different places. She actually chose the Presbyterian Manor because of the cottages. As things deteriorated, she would already know the community and move as needed,” said Judy. up through the solarium. Instead of walking back and forth down the long hallway, they can go outside and see what’s blooming and make one big circle. It’s more space to be out and about,” said Ann.
