Don’t fall for

these myths.

reduce your risk of falling

Many people think falls are a natural part of aging, however, they can be prevented. In honor of National Fall Prevention Month, we’re providing you with tips to decrease your risk. Lori Forck, a regional wellness coordinator for RehabCare, says even a few simple exercises can build up strength where you need it to help keep you balanced and on your feet. “Among people who are 65 and older, one in three will have a fall each year. It’s one of those statistics that I find mind-blowing,” Forck said. The National Council on Aging provides proven fall prevention programs for seniors across the nation. To dispel misconceptions about falls, the council debunks common myths, such as:

Myth 2: If I limit my activity or stay home, I won’t fall. Fact: Staying active will help you remain independent and healthy.

Over half of falls happen at home. Simple changes can prevent them.

Myth 3: Muscle strength and flexibility can’t be regained. Fact: Exercising can help restore strength and flexibility. Myth 4: Taking medication doesn’t increase my risk of falling. Fact: Medications affect each person differently. Be careful when you start a new medication, and call your doctor when you have questions or concerns.

grandparents

matter By Allen Teal, chaplain, Rolla Presbyterian Manor

“Grandchildren are the crown of the aged,” Proverbs 17:6 (ESV) My mother lost her grandparents before she could know them. I knew all of my grandparents and one of my great-grandparents. My granddaughter knows six out of eight of her great-grandparents. Becoming a grandparent is an expected part of life today. We should regard it as a high privilege because many earlier generations did not share this opportunity. One of the great blessings of the Bible speaks of this: “May you live to see your children’s children…” Psalm 128:6 (NIV). “Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them fade from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them.” Deuteronomy 4:9 (NIV)

without taking the opportunity to learn from our grandparents. Grandparents can be a rich treasury of family background and a living history book. Frequently, they have lived through great events that younger generations only read about. When this experience is shared, feelings and reactions can be put into the account that no book could ever adequately convey. The information grandparents can share is a priceless store that you can share with a new generation that will never meet them. “…but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.” Exodus 20:6 (NIV) Godly grandparents’ lives result in more than stories to share with the grandkids. It can become an influence for decades and centuries to come. As grandparents let their faith shine, younger people will be affected.

I attribute my faith today to my grandparents. It was their life, their prayers, and their words that drew me to serve God. If you are a grandparent, take the While God instructs grandparents time to unveil your faith in front to share their knowledge and of your grandchildren. If you experience, children and grandchildren often wait until it is too late are a grandchild, seek out your grandparents and learn what great to seek out this wisdom. It is too easy to let the days and years pass things God has done for them.
