Soup supper The 36th annual Soup Supper was held Friday, Oct. 21. More than 1,200 tickets were sold. Proceeds from the Soup Supper benefit the Good Samaritan program, which serves an important aspect of our mission: to allow manor residents to continue living here even if they deplete their funds through no fault of their own. A special item this year was the “Love Chocolate” cookbook compiled by health care residents from family recipes. They spent a lot of time this year trying the recipes before including them in the book. You can still get a copy by stopping by the business office. The cost is $8. Another favorite feature of the fundraiser was greeting cards featuring the pictures of resident photographer Gerald Karnes. The cards were sold individually this SOUP, continued on page 2

We’re thankful for veterans Veterans Day is the official United States public holiday on Nov. 11 annually that honors military veterans, those persons who served in the United States Armed Forces. It coincides with holidays celebrated in other countries, including Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, that mark the anniversary of the end of World War I. Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 when the Armistice with Germany went into effect. The U.S. holiday was renamed Veterans Day in 1954. Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans, while Memorial Day honors those who died in military service (Wikipedia). We are thankful for those who keep us safe and provide for our security. Join us at our Veterans Day celebration in the Ivory Keys Café to acknowledge the service of resident veterans. Veterans, wear your uniforms if you’d like.

year so people could choose the ones that most appealed to them. (Photo at right.) This year’s drawing items included quite a few lovely gift baskets, gasoline gift cards, an airplane made by a resident from pop cans, and a kingsize, professionally quilted spread. The silent auction included a large celebration basket with wines, coffee and snacks, a wreath by Artful Parties and Events, and two one-night stays at the Raphael Hotel on Country Club Plaza in Kansas City, Mo. Thanks to all who made this a special night and who make this event happen each year: volunteers, residents, advisory council members, employees and our many supporters in the Salina community. We couldn’t do this without you, and so many will benefit from your generosity.

KU road trip Our recent trip to the University of Kansas for a tour of Allen Fieldhouse, the Booth Family Hall of Athletics and the DeBruce Center, housing the football program, was very interesting. Our tour guide was Nate Dreiling, a football coach who is also the son of our Activity Director Cathy Boos. We ended the day with lunch at the Oread. Gina Lee’s art class We’re learning a lot from Gina Lee, who is leading an art class at Presbyterian Manor, and we are finding the hidden artists in us. The resident gallery on the first floor showcases all the paintings created in those classes, as well as other resident works of art. We eagerly look forward to Gina’s next class. Please consider joining us and find your unique, artistic self.

Musings from Mary… Welcome to November! I don’t know about you but I am more than ready to turn the calendar to the 11th month of this year, and specifically I’m ready to check the eighth day off and be finished with the election. I am weary of the neverending political chaos. How did elections come to this? Our constitution guarantees free speech, and everyone who has an opinion is speaking freely and loudly. Social media and a 24-hour news cycle add fuel to the fire. I personally vow to respect each of you, regardless of whom you choose to support in this election. I won’t unfriend you on Facebook because of your political views. I believe that degrades democracy and free thinking. While 9/11 brought us together as a country, it also brought fear to our front door. We have become especially fearful of those who think or look different from us, and this fear seems to have infected our political process. The late Shimon Peres said, “Human beings should be filled not with fear but with hope.” What happens after the election is even more important. I believe if we are to survive as a nation, we must somehow, some way once again come together and work together— really work together—to respect our newly elected officials and use Ephesians 4:3 as our guide. “Making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” I would like to suggest that we adopt a new practice of greeting one another as a reminder of this verse in Ephesians, and we begin today. More dementia-reducing brain games planned By Cathy Boos, life enrichment director
After attending the Kansas Activities Directors Association conference in September, it became apparent it was essential to add more brain games to our activities. A study cited in the New England Journal of Medicine found individuals who played board games often had a substantially reduced risk of developing dementia than those who played games less often. Math was also seen to be an effective intervention for restoring cognitive function in people with dementia. Thus you will begin to see more critical thinking games, science lab experiments, card games and baking classes, as well as music sing-alongs to rekindle the spirit of songs long ago. Computer use also helps the brain MUSINGS, continued from page 4
The practice is called Namaste, pronounced “nah-mah-STAY.” It is both a Hindi and a Nepali word. It is said in India and Nepal as a salutation, just as we would say “hello” or “goodbye” in the United Sates. The word “namaste” is Sanskrit. The preClassical form of Sanskrit (known as Vedic Sanskrit) dates back to as early as 1500 BC.

Celebrate and give thanks Thanksgiving Day is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November by federal legislation in 1941, but it has been an annual tradition in the United States by presidential proclamation since 1863 and by state legislation since the Founding Fathers. Historically, Thanksgiving has traditionally been a celebration of the blessings of the year, including the harvest (Wikipedia). We say “the holiday season begins with Thanksgiving.”
Namaste is typically said with the hands pressed together and held near the heart. Some translations are: “I honor the place in you which is of love, truth, light, and peace” and “I honor the sacredness and equality in us all.” And my personal favorite: “The spirit in me respects the spirit in you.” Do you remember the song “Count Like us on Facebook
• Nov. 19: Carolyn Zimmerman Piano Concert: Beethoven’s “Tempest Sonata”
Your Blessings”? It’s a nice tune: “Count your blessings—count them one by one.” Let’s do that. Each day remember or discover a blessing you have received over the year—one by one—that you are thankful for. Try it this holiday season. Write them down. Take them out and look at them on occasion and add to the list. Salina Presbyterian Manor

Employee of the Month for October Employee of the Month for October was Shauna Andres, who has worked as a RN at Presbyterian Manor for six months. Shauna enjoys crafting and hanging out with her family and dog. Two things we didn’t know about outgoing Shauna is that she describes herself as “socially awkward,” and that
she cleaned houses to earn money for college. Her goal is to be either a nurse practitioner or a giant dog rescue farm owner. In her words, “whichever way the wind blows.” Congratulations on your selection as Employee of the Month by your co-workers. We’re glad you are part of our team!
New beginnings in 2017
We will focus on new beginnings in an upcoming issue of Community Matters. As we approach the new year, what resolutions are you making? Have you ever made a resolution that changed your life? What are your hopes for 2017? If you’ve got a story to share, contact Marketing Director Kim Fair, and your story could be featured in an upcoming edition of Community Matters.
