Mary’s Musings By Mary Bridges, chaplain Salina Presbyterian Manor
While you are reading this in November, I actually wrote it on October 4, which is celebrated by many churches as the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi. St. Francis was born at Assisi in 1182. After a carefree youth, he turned his back on inherited wealth and committed himself to God. Like many early saints, he lived a very simple life of poverty. He established the rule of St. Francis, which is known today as the Order of St. Francis. He died in 1226, aged 44. In 2004, I was called to be the interim pastor at Messiah Lutheran Church in Lindsborg for the year that their pastor, Stephen Pera, was called to active duty in the Middle East. During that year, we used what has become known as the Prayer of St. Francis as our theme. It is a prayer that not only touches hearts, it summarizes how we should live. Although this prayer is associated with St. Francis, it is entirely absent from his writings. The prayer in its present form has not been traced back further than 1912. The prayer was heavily publicized during both World War I and World War II. It has been set to music by songwriters MUSINGS, continued on page 4
Resident Terry Headrick and his granddaughter, Katie, enjoy creating works of art together.
Intergenerational art class Every other month, the young and the young at heart come together within the community to collaborate in the name of art. Side-by-side— and often together—the budding artists work on projects ranging from acrylic paintings to holiday ornaments, but often the finished product is little more than an afterthought. “This class gives me some time to spend with my granddaughter. They grow up so fast that sometimes you just don’t get to spend any time with them,” said resident Terry Headrick. “When they first initiated the class and said they were going to do it, I jumped at the chance, and I asked Katie, my granddaughter, if she would be interested. She looks forward to it every month we have the class.” Phyllis Sundgren, whose great granddaughters Alyssa, 9, and Emma, 13, often join her for the class, said she feels the same. relaxing, rewarding experience.”
13-year-old granddaughter Katie.
“It’s fun being with them, doing projects. I was surprised that they were as enthused to come and do that with me. If they’re available, they always want to come,” said Phyllis.
And while you’d expect it to be the residents who are always lending a hand to the classes’ younger participants, Gina is surprised to find that it’s often the other way around.
The significance of the class for Katie can be summed up in one project from last fall.
Beyond the chance to spend time with their loved ones, instructor Gina Lee believes the class offers additional benefits to the residents who participate.
“It is amazing how much support these children can give and the maturity they demonstrate even though they are young,” said Gina.
“Art allows the residents to be creative and work their minds in a way they might not usually do,” said Gina. “Additionally, having the opportunity to connect with young people while making artwork is a
But like their grandparents, the kids who participate are really just there to have a good time. “I enjoy getting a chance to spend time together. It’s fun, and I like meeting new people,” said Terry’s
“In November, our project was a three-dimensional piece representing what we were thankful for, and I chose my Papa, because without him and Nana and my mom, I wouldn’t be here.” In addition to the opportunity to spend time with their grandparents, each child who participates in the class gets a certificate of appreciation, a ribbon, is allowed to exhibit their art within the community and is invited to attend the Art is Ageless® reception.

and quoted by well-known leaders. Its inclusive language appeals to diverse faiths and encourages service to others. It has often been called “The Prayer of Peace.” This week, I read an article that said the United States is more divided than at any time in our history, including the Civil War. I don’t know about you, but this frightens me. How do we get back to the country our founders envisioned for us? I don’t have any answers, but this is my personal plan. I am not only going to reclaim the words of this gentle prayer and pray it daily, I am going to work 24/7 to live its words in my daily interactions with others. I challenge each of you to do the same. Can we change our world and our environment by doing this? I don’t know but what do we have to lose? Join me in showing love and respect to those we meet, and especially those we disagree with. Let us find a way to change hate to love. Love can overcome hate.

Community Matters November 2018
Let all of us live into the words of “This Prayer of Peace.” Lord, make me an instrument of your peace, Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy; O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
We will have a Thanksgiving potluck on Nov. 14 for health care, assisted living and memory care. Some of the things we will be cooking will be pepper nachos, pumpkin and pecan pie and soup.
