High honors for executive director, Sterling Presbyterian Manor It’s no surprise that others in the senior living industry look to Sterling Presbyterian Manor Executive Director Mike Rajewski for advice, inspiration and leadership. After all, Sterling Presbyterian Manor was one of only four care centers in Kansas with zero infractions on their most recent survey. Mike has been asked to join the statewide advisory committee for PEAK (Promoting Excellent Alternatives in Kansas), a program of the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services.

Mike Rajewski will join the statewide advisory committee for Promoting Excellent Alternatives in Kansas (PEAK).

“There are around eight other people from across the state on the committee, and this will be a great opportunity to give feedback on how the program is and isn’t working. PEAK is a recognition and education program to encourage providers in Kansas to adopt culture change and focus on patient-centered care. If you’re on the PEAK program, you get payments and increased incentives, like additional Medicaid payment per resident per day. It’s good for our residents, and good for the community as a whole,” said Mike. Congratulations to our executive director, and to our entire Sterling Presbyterian Manor team, on achieving excellence and being a role model for others!

Pastor Ken Connor’s Corner: In Luke 24:5b, we read these words spoken by the angel to the women at the tomb, “Why do you look for the living among the dead?” That truly is the question that separates Christianity from all other religions in the world: our God is alive. That in a nutshell is the reason we celebrate Easter. “He is not here, he is risen.” The God who created the universe and all that is in it could not be held captive by a stone covering the opening to his tomb. The soldiers lied about what happened, backed by the religious leaders of the day, and yet the truth echoes down through the ages and is as clear today as it was that first resurrection morning. “He is Alive!”

Another Van Victory

Last fall, we were happy to announce Sterling Presbyterian Manor as the recipient of a new van, provided by grant funds from the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT). With this new-and-improved method of transportation, Sterling Presbyterian Manor residents, as well as Sterling community members, were able to achieve better mobility and quality of life.

This program has been so successful that we recently received news that KDOT has granted us funds to purchase an even bigger van, which will resemble more of a miniature bus. It has a wheelchair lift and will accommodate multiple passengers with wheelchairs. The new van will most likely arrive in September, and we’re thrilled to give even more community members the freedom to shop, get to doctor appointments, go out to eat, or just enjoy a day on the town! To schedule a ride, contact Genny at 620278-3651, ext. 3144, and leave a message if she’s not able to answer. Rides are free, but a donation for van upkeep and maintenance is greatly appreciated.

From California to Kansas Twin volunteer support twice as nice

In addition to being twins, Krissy and Gabby Baca share more than just DNA in common. They both came to Sterling College on soccer scholarships, and they both enjoy volunteering at Sterling Presbyterian Manor. We appreciate all of our community volunteers and give them special appreciation during April, National Volunteer Month.

While Krissy and Gabby may be a long way from their home state of California, they’ve found a family of sorts with the residents of Sterling Presbyterian Manor.

“We enjoy getting to know the residents here, eating supper with them, greeting and welcoming people, and we never leave without smiles on our faces,” said Krissy.

Gabby agrees, and adds that they’re sometimes surprised just how much fun is had at Sterling Manor.

“We also enjoy doing fun things with residents, like playing dominoes, puzzles or bingo. And there’s always

Krissy Baca with resident Helen Evans, with whom she finds much in common, like talking, laughing and singing.

something going on, like movie days, holiday parties, or themed activities. They enjoy being around college kids, and are much more relatable to talk with than I thought!” said Gabby.

When not at school or volunteering, you can find Krissy and Gabby playing soccer, at the gym, or outside in general. They have two cats, Lulu and Lils, and are studying psychology (Gabby) and business management/law enforcement (Krissy). We appreciate the support and companionship of the sisters, and they’ve even identified which residents most capture their spirit.

Gabby Baca enjoys the company of Nelsie McLaughlin, who shares her spunky spirit.

“Nelsie! I love to dance and make people laugh, and I feel like her energetic and spunky spirit is similar to mine. Also Helen, she’s always got something to say, and is fun to talk to and laugh with. She’s got quite the singing voice!”
